Sharn, The City of Towers

The Capital of Breland. Former Goblin city, Mak'rok, before the Brelish came in and conquered the land in the early parts of the Second Age. Sharn after the Brelish took over became a city of towers, and a vast array of architectural designs can been seen as the towers rise higher and higher. The lower levels keep the goblin motif and feature thick, strong buildings to support the towers above. Ascending to the towers tops the structures are more distinctly human in design and very ornate near the tower tops.   The city never sleeps, is always a hum with activity and features a wide cultures and commercial delights. The awe and grandeur of the city are matched only by it's crime rate and corruption.   Sharn sits atop cliffs overlooking The Hilt. This incredibly fortunate position has set Sharn up to be the major trading hub of the peninsula. Ports at the base of the cliffs, in the Cliffside district, where all of the trading cargo passes through, are manned by dock workers and seprated from the rest of the city by massive magical cranes that live the cargo up into the city so that most people do not need to travel down to the docks to receive their packages.   It is rumored that the city sits atop a massive lava field, workers in The Cogs claim to feel extra heat comng from the ground and claim it helps to forges there when refining ore and making weapons. Nobody dares to find the lava, if it is there at all, because the paths ways that lead deeper are not mapped, and memory of them has been lost.   Social standing in the city is laid out from top to bottom, with the poorest residents living in Cliffside or the lowest levels of the towers. Social standing rises as one ascends to towers. The upper most levels have luxurious pent houses and house many of the leaders of industry, government, and nobility. Above everything is a floating disk The Skyway, exclusive to only the most important and rich residents of the city.   The city is built on commerce."If it can be bought, it can be bought here" is rumored to be coined in the many market places of the city. Shops exist as open air, portable stands in large plaza markets, to fine establishments with guards posted at the front door. Equally as important is the black market of exotic and illegal good floating around the city. From exotic animals prized for their beauty or magical properties, to slaves and drugs the black market in Sharn will have what you need if you cannot find it elsewhere.   The city houses the Main campus of Morgrave University. The school has a less than perfect reputation for all manner of reasons - from producing evil wizards, to illegal magical experimentation, and political influencing - but is able to maintain itself with the money and it does have to continue arcane study and funding magical item expeditions.   The Sharn City Watch enforces The Code of Justice in the city limits, however you will rarely see an officer in the lowest levels of the towers unless specific circumstances require it.   Crime is alive and well in Sharn, many crime bosses operate legitimate and illegitimate companies. many are in good social stading as well, as they make sizable donations (i.e. "investments") to charities and politicians. Without over illegal actions, the Sharn City Watch turns a blind eye to these affairs.   During The Last War the city was the main coordination center of the war efforts.
