Cybernetics

Cybernetics refers to any implantable or graftable item of technology designed to augment or replace existing biology.   While cybernetics have existed since before the start of the The Galactic Date, they have been legal, and regulated since at least 21056.00 when a multi nation commission was set up to determine what constitutes a legal and safe item of cybernetic technology and to recommend regulations to keep such pieces of technology safe and effective.   While there remains a strong and healthy black market for illegal cybernetics, the times before the commission were a dangerous time for people who desired to augment their bodies. Implants were not guaranteed to do what they say and might even contain hidden technology to spy or to otherwise hurt the recipient. Some had logic bombs that would ransom the implantee's brain unless they paid large amounts of credits.   Today's cybernetic's market is highly safe and well regulated with sellers and implanters both licensed and trained.   People are urged to avoid black market sellers. Always make sure your seller is licensed and verified.

Access & Availability
Cybernetics are widely available especially as a medical tool to repair or circumvent damage to an organic body. Cosmetic and functional cybernetic upgrades are more rare and much more expensive. This leads to a thriving black market for such goods.
Complexity
Cybernetics vary in complexity based on the function they replace/enhance. An implant that replaces or enhanced a digit or appendage is less complex than an implant that repairs or enhances a sense or brain function.   The higher complexity of an implant, the more risk to the implanted patient. Failure of an implant is always a risk though that can be low depending on the source of the device. A failure of a highly complex implant could lead to severe implications, including coma and death.   Another drawback of cybernetics is the general inability to reverse the procedure, especially with brain implants. Brain, sense, and spinal implants are a zero sum medical procedure. This means that material needs to be removed for the implant to be inserted and to operate effectively. The removed tissue can not be recovered.
