Ivinian

The Ivinians are newcomers to Hârn. They a seafaring Northmen who invaded the kingdoms of Jara, along Hârns northern coasts, founding the Kingdom of Orbaal.

The Ivinians tend to be tall, with light hair and eyes.

They are boisterous, warlike and skilled traders. Their dragonships inspire fear throughout the world.

Ivinians are very similar to the Vikings of Terra.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Ivinian is spoken by all. Most speak Hârnic and those from Orbaal speak Orbaalese as well.

Culture and cultural heritage

Ivinians worship warrior gods and for the most part Sarajin, a god of battlelust. They follow a code of honor, the Ljarl, which contains elements of Courage, Loyalty, Duty, Honesty, and prohibitions against kinslaying.

Berserkers, bloodfeuds and vendettas play a significant part of their culture.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

A woman may choose to become Shieldmaiden and devote themselves to a life as a warrior. These women are generally extremely competent and dangerous as the criteria is to theoretically remain a virgin and unbeaten in combat.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Funerals in burning ships are common.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

Though Ivinian society is largely male-dominant, women are not docile home-makers tending the children while the men are away on Viking raids. Most receive some weapon training and in times of need they will stand and fight alongside their husbands and sons.

Relationship Ideals

Polygamy is common place.

A man requires 4 wives to be able to vote in settlement councils for leaders or in judgement.
