Session 260 - Renegade's Fate
General Summary
27th to 30th of Agrazhar (Third month of Summer) 725TR
The story so far
Jolanta is pursuing her hated rival, the renegade wizard Richemanus Hyrdeman. He has shown interest in one of Lothrim the Foulspawner lieutenants, the Egg Keeper, who hid some artifact called the Nest in Eagle Point, near Fort Sirion.
The party has saved the miners at Fort Sirion from an Orc army. The grateful miners have led the heroes to Eagle Point. Here they find an underground cave network. Unfortunately, it is infested with Orcs and evil Wizards.
This is the continuation of the battle started in Session 259 - Under Eagle Point.
Location - In a cavern complex in the foothills West of Lake Benath near the Rayesha Mountains.
Part 1 - The Battle Continues
The Situation.
Things look grim.
The injured Acheron casts Greater Invisibility and strikes at the guard, failing to connect, so he backs away. To his surprise, the Bodyguard leaves him and enters the main chamber, searching for Jolanta. He instead spots Blaine.
With so many of the heroes cloaked in Invisibility, Richemanus attempts to cast True Sight, but this is foiled by both Jolanta using Counterspell. Avon and Blaine kill the remaining Orc, but the Bodyguard arrives and expertly cuts down Blaine in a pool of blood, and then the Assassin shoots poisoned crossbow bolts at Moneypenny, badly injuring her. However, Jolanta turns Avon Invisible and efficiently disposes of both the Assassin and Bodyguard.
Meanwhile, Acheron distracts Richmanus, Counterspelling the wizard's magic with the last of his spells, and Jolanta applies Sand of Life on Blaine, instantly stopping his severe bleeding.
Part 2- Vengeance
Acheron and Avon approach Richmanus and get close. Avon stabs him with his Cursed Hunting, badly injuring him and failing to get a kill. He may suffer for that. The frantic wizard tries one last gambit, casting Forcecage, catching Avon and Acheron within its invisible walls for an hour. They can't help Jolanta.
Richmanus is badly injured and considers fleeing. He could Dimension Door away, but that would leave the secrets and treasures of this location at Jolanta's mercy. All his schemes will be for naught, and his mistress will be very displeased. That fate is worse than death, so he risks it all. If he can kill Jolanta, he can easily deal with the two miscreants trapped in the Forcecage at his leisure.
Jolanta and Richmanus face off for the last time. Jolanta acts first, pouring every ounce of physical and magical strength into her rarely-used Corrosive Ray spell. Over-channeling wreaks her body, and as blood runs from her nose and ears, intense white rays shoot out from her hands and all pound into the corrupt wizard with focused precision. With much of his strength sapped, he cannot resist. Large chunks of his flesh disappear, and little of his body remains. Jolanta has won. Her betrayer is dead by her magic.Part 3 - The Foulspawn Plot
With all the adversaries finished, the heroes rest and investigate the camp, attempting to uncover Richmanus's schemes.
They deduce the following;
In the center of the main chamber is a 15ft diameter hemisphere of black crystalline stone. It is the magical artifact called the Nest, and anything contained within it is held in some form of magical stasis. Inside centuries ago, Lothrim the Foulspawner's lieutenants stored orc eggs. Some eggs were from orc species that died out during Lothrim's time. One was the Grey Orc, similar to the common Orc. It does not breed as fast but is not troubled by sunlight as most orcs are.
Richmanus was working under the direction of a mysterious figure called Lothrim's Daughter to recover the Nest and the orc eggs. In a nearby offal pit, they find some of them incubating. Blaine uses his Earthmaster Spear to skewer them, then roast them over a campfire. Jolanta disintegrates the remaining eggs.
Jolanta, being a trusted Order of the White Hand agent, is well aware Lothrim's Daughter is a pseudonym used by the Renegade Wizard Dyalne Dulye, the most dangerous human spellcaster alive. She needs to report this information to the White Hand leadership as soon as possible.
