Suri Fairwood
Suri Fairwood is a halfling woman of 106 years. Her clothing is unusually practical and dull for a halfling, and despite her grey hair and obvious venerability, she doesn’t seem at all matronly. She always carries a satchel containing several sets of writing supplies.
At odds with the tight-knit halfling community she grew up in, Suri moved out in her early twenties and established herself as a professor in Baldur’s Gate. As passionate as she was about equipping citizens with basic knowledge, Suri was frustrated by their general reticence to seek vital education. She moved from city to city for the next 80 years but always struggled with the bustle, the strictures of academia, and a poor reception from both students and colleagues, who felt she was harsh and impersonal despite her considerable academic accomplishments. During this time she was always absorbed in her work and never married or had children (nor did she want to).
Having burnt out on teaching in Neverwinter for twelve years, Suri moved to Mythrite not long after it was established. She had few places left to go, and thought the miners and other common folk would benefit from an educator’s presence. She also hoped it would be quieter than a big city, though she was thoroughly disappointed on this front, especially living in The Halberd. She lives with three halfling families that remind her entirely too much of home. She is not afraid to berate her housemates and neighbors for being too loud or rambunctious, and as such is unpopular in the Halberd.
Suri blames Miners and Guild workers every time they are manipulated or preyed on by Merchants or Professionals but is always willing to put in the time to teach them to read, write, do math, or otherwise learn to protect themselves from the upper classes. Suri tends to assume she knows what’s best for others and pushes aggressively for them to see things her way. In her defense, she’s often right, although she often drives people away with her bluntness.
Although she prefers to teach adults, Suri has found herself teaching children in Mythrite, and even babysitting for her neighbors. She is resentful of this but still tries to impart knowledge on the youngest townsfolk. She’s often impatient with children but her best pupils learn a lot and earn her true respect. Despite all the tumult and danger, Suri believes in Mythrite more than she has in any community she’s been a part of and is very invested in seeing it flourish. As such, she is tirelessly vocal about the importance of education.
