Tobias Silverleaf
Mindartis Atheldon was a mild mannered man. He left the High Forest hoping to meet more of the world. He met Kethra Brightleaf, a curious woman, just outside Neverwinter where they began to build a life together. The two could be seen going into Neverwinter to trade furs. It was to no one's surprise when Kethra became pregnant. She eventually gave birth to Tobias Silverleaf in 1466.
Tobies spent his early years learning to tailor with Kethra. Kethra and Tobias would sleep in, while Mindartis went out to hunt. When he got back he would wake them. Tobias and his mother would then dress the kills that his father would bring back, setting hide out to tan in front of their log cabin. The afternoons and evenings, Tobias watched his mother, as her hands darted across the surface of various furs. She would make coats and pants. After she amassed enough outfits, she would bring Tobias into Neverwinter. There they would stop to see Kethra’s brother, Ander Brightleaf. He would help them sell the clothing, regaling Tobias with stories of distant travels and strange customers.
When Tobias turned 10 his mornings changed. Early, as the sun peaked above the pines. Mindartis would wake Tobias. The two would share a silent breakfast, before setting out into Neverwinter Wood. Tobias’s first kill was a rabbit. Mindartis described it as, “A big and lazy old rabbit.” It was later turned into a small bracer and glove for young Tobias.
Tobias’s weeks continued like this for the next six years. He hunted in the morning and tailored in the afternoon. On the weekends he would stay with his uncle Ander, learning about the ins and outs of being a merchant. Ander would pull out a cigar once Kethra left. “Don’t tell your mother.” He would always say with a smile. Like any other night, Ander would pop out his favorite Elven wine. Each weekend was a new tale. Not like the quick stories Tobias was told when he was a kid. Ander would lament into the early morning about lovers, friends and treasures. There was always one constant, regret. He would go on and on about he could have made more, or pushed father. “A deal can always be bigger!” he would then collapse on the couch in his living space. “Tobias, never settle for less.” He’d whisper before passing out. Tobias would then curl up on a chair rewinding the story he was just told.
“You should come stay in the city.” Ander tipped his head toward Tobias winking before his mother turned around eyeing her brother. The two then haggled for three hours. Tobias dipped out about half way through, feeling the weight of coins pull his cloak toward the street. This was his first night alone in the city, he knew it wouldn't help his cause with his mother but he had to get out. His only stop was the Lucky Lavender Tavern. A place he had been in once years ago when his mother forgot him with his uncle. Ander would also prattle about the place all the time, it was where him and his alcoholic friends would meet up. This was where Tobias met Farwin, his first love. A funny gnome aspiring bard. The two would spend late nights together at the bar sharing a glass of wine and smoking on what was available. Tobias loved hearing about life in the lustrous city. However, the two quickly grew bored of each other.
Tobias moved in with his uncle under the guise of bettering his education, another few years went by. Ander would purchase furs for Tobias to turn into cloaks. The two quickly turned a profit every summer before the fall and winter hit. The two would then blow their money through the cold season, ready to work once the snow melted off. Tobias could never keep up with his uncle, something he was grateful for.
Tobias was now 24 the world headed into spring. As Ander lay in a morning stupor, Tobias's parents came to visit. Kethra gave her brother a swift kick in the gut “Where’s Tobias?” Tobias roused by the noise stumbled into the living room, as a lover followed him out after him. The two stopped, his father’s gaze was on them. Tobias felt like that fat old rabbit. The stranger excused themselves and left. Mandartis left without saying a word, Kethra came over and asked. “Tobias,” pointing at the crying slump, “do you really want to end up like your uncle?” Kethra hugged Tobias and left. Ander called Tobias over, “My boy, they are right I have so many regrets.” He stared into Tobias eyes. Ander’s eyes were bloodshot, his tear ducts swollen as they tried to cough up liquid. “I’ve heard of a mining town, cropped up because some dwarves struck mythril or some bullshit, all that matters is there are hundreds of people flocking there.” He winked, “And it’s gonna get cold soon enough.” Tobias gathered his supplies, thinking to himself “Never settle for less.”
Tobias arrives in Mythrite about a month before the start of summer. He purchases a property in Eronia, getting to work on new cloaks. His business is successful, advertising and selling to the ill-equipped. On the weekends Tobias visits the Uphill Lounge, he doesn't like the stuffy parlors of his neighbors, he wants to have a drink and converse with real people. He meets his first friend Selussa Gilbella, a dancer and actor who works at the lounge. Quickly smitten by them, Tobias goes to buy them a gift of wine, where he meets his second friend, Julia Longvine. She quickly becomes his primary source of wine, and a secondary source of conversation, her confidence reminding Tobias of Farwin.
Life catches up with Tobias as the leaves start dropping. He has grown lethargic and emaciated. Only going out to trade and pick up wine.
