Merdu Vaesen

PERSONALITY IN A NUTSHELL

Overall Merdu is charismatic and easygoing to a fault. He believes many things will work themselves out, and often fails to see a situation to be as dangerous as it is. He believes things that are shown to him, able to very quickly change his opinions on a dime if shown sufficient evidence. He is quick to take responsibility for things that he knows he is responsible for, and will refuse to leave a matter alone until he deems it taken care of. Merdu is also rather prideful, and refuses to back done when confronted about his belief in the Occult. While he does not seek out conflict and does choose to avoid those that he knows won't believe him, he will not run from them either if he happens to encounter the sort.

PRIMARY TRAITS

Delusioned, Confident

UPBRINGING

Merdu's parents, Marie and Abraham Morrison, never particularly cared for him, nor did they revile him. With their efforts instead put towards making sure there was just enough coin to put food on the table and clothes on their backs, Merdu was often free to leave the house and do as he pleased. They did not bat an eye when he picked up on studying the occult, nor did they question the dreams he began to speak of. His newfound charisma was getting him, and thus the family, more money, and allowing them to get a little more to eat each day. That was enough for them. When he had the idea of leaving home to explore Munson, they did not stop him, instead simply packing him with what little they could and telling him to come home in a month. He cares for his parents as family, but does not feel deeply connected to either.

CAREER

Merdu used to be a shy, quiet boy. He feared speaking with others, instead choosing to shirk away and shut himself in. One night, however, he dreamed of a creature, elephant-like in appearance, with horns and claws. It spoke with him, and, remarkably, he found himself able to speak back without fear. Talking with this strange creature brought him peace and courage, and eventually brought him to speak in his waking world as well. He built up a newfound charisma, almost supernaturally so, and became able to talk people's wallets out of their hands, or turn their beliefs on their heads. In his dreams, he often still met with and spoke with the odd creature that he now believes blessed him with speech and freed him from fear. The creature shared with him stories of others of its kind, some reviled, some feared, some misunderstood. Merdu has now become determined to show the world that these creatures, these Vaesen, can be gifts to humanity, as they were to him, if only they are permitted to do as they need and no more. He has taken on their name as his own, rejecting his family name until he believes his legendary work is done.

BELIEFS

Merdu rejects established religions, believing that if these worshipped gods were so mighty, they would do something to help the families in need, such as his own. Instead he accepts the occult, as a creature of it is responsible for truly lifting him from his fears and helping his family survive. He wishes to share this belief with others, spreading the ideas that the occult is not to be feared, but rather accepted for what it can give. He has not had direct interactions with spirituality, and does not believe that spirits or an afterlife exists. However seeing is believing, and he would readily accept their existence if it is proven to him.

MOTIVATIONS

  • Liberation - To free the self and/or others from perceived captivity or enslavement: Merdu was freed from his fear of others by Vaesen and the occult, and believes that by spreading acceptance of the Vaesen to others, so too can they be freed from their fears. However, he believes this freedom can come in two ways. One can be blessed by a Vaesen, as he himself was, or one can come to understand what they fear so they fear it no more. As often Vaesen themselves are the source of ones fear, he wishes to teach people of them and understand them. If this is not possible, and such a creature is incapable of leaving a human alone, he is not below eliminating the threat.
  • Beneficence - To protect the helpless, heal the sick, feed the hungry, etc.: Similar to above, Merdu does what he does because he believes it is for the betterment of people. His freedom from fear allowed him to make his family more money, and to stabilize their living. By freeing others from fear, he hopes it will allow them to live better lives and turn around their negative living situations.

FAST FACTS

  • Accomplishment most proud of: Merdu once convinced a group of religious-folk to speak with a Vaesen that was haunting their church. He not only caused them to accept that it was real, but mediated conversation such that they allowed the Vaesen to stay within the church and it ceased disrupting the services and church-goers in exchange for small trinkets. This is to date his only successful attempt at convincing religious-folk of the existence, and even sometimes harmlessness, of Vaesen.
  • Most ashamed about: Early after he learned of the existence of Vaesen from his dream-creature, Merdu was convinced that all of them could be good for humanity, that all could bless others as his had blessed him. His attempts at convincing a man to consort with the Vaesen haunting him, rather than drive it away, caused the man to accept the Vaesen into his dreams just as Merdu had. The Vaesen then drove the man mad. Merdu has learned since then, and knows not to trust everything these creatures say, but still believes that many can be beneficial to humanity if dealt with properly. His failure to realize their dangers sooner, however, still haunts him.
  • Fears more than anything: More than anything else, Merdu fears being afraid once more. He fears his courage and his voice leaving him, and becoming once more that small child that hid away whenever a stranger knocked on the door. Surprisingly, he has yet to have a nightmare where that occurs...
  • Secrets kept: Merdu is a surprisingly honest man (one must be, when convincing others of the supernatural). The only true secret he keeps is his real last name, Morrison. He instead introduces himself as Merdu Vaesen, believing the supernatural last name gives him an extra hint of charm and candor. Often it doesn't.
  • Last time they wept: Merdu last wept while reading a particularly sad book. (This might be a placeholder answer)

RELATIONS

  • Friends: After being blessed, Merdu began to find it quite easy to make friends. Most of them would describe him as charismatic and easy to talk to, though often a tad eccentric. He tends to have a habit of discussing the occult, even praising it, without reading the room first. This has made some people fairly uncomfortable. Despite that, he is fairly popular among those that he's come to know.
  • Romance: Merdu has not been socially active for long enough to really begin to consider romance, and has not had any prior partners.
  • Role Model: Though he has yet to meet him, Merdu has heard of Professor Amos Church and the long-winded lectures the man gives on the occult. He's heard of how popular (and sometimes infamous) the man is, and believes Professor Church is doing the type of work Merdu wishes to do on a much larger scale; explaining the unnatural so that others may set aside their fears of it.

MEMENTO

Merdu's memento is a powder compact filled with sleeping pills. These were purchased from a local drug store. As Merdu finds safety and comfort in sleep and dreams, he often makes use of these when trying to get through a particularly rough night or time in his life. He has also used them on others (always with permission) so that they can escape their fears for a time.

ADVANTAGE

Merdu has been blessed by a dream-faring Vaesen, which has helped him overcome his fear of people and social interaction and made him a natural charmer. Note that in almost all cases it is a NATURAL charm, entirely from Merdu himself as a person. However, there have been rare cases, situations in which he has dug himself far deeper than he could escape from, that something inside him has taken over. In these times he's almost found as if his tongue moves itself, his mouth forms words and thoughts he never would have come up with himself, and he escapes from danger without a hitch. Just another blessing from his Vaesen friend, he supposes.

EQUIPMENT

Crystal Ball - Merdu accidentally dropped and cracked it. He never knew how to do any divination or such with it anyways, he just thinks it looks neat. Tinder Box - Half empty, fire tends to be useful in many ways. Dagger - The world is a dangerous place, Merdu is prepared to protect himself. He keeps it surprisingly sharp.

History

Though he did not intend to do so, Merdu was speaking of his "blessings" in great detail a little too close to Reverend Behart's church. After a heated debate between the two and a foolish, open denouncement of God's teachings, Merdu is no longer welcome at the Greystone Baptist Church. This is not a true ban as much as it is a strong suggestion from the reverend.
