Rhoda Pitcher

Have you met Rhoda Pitcher? If not, give it time. As we tell newcomers, everyone knows Rhoda.   She's the clerk at the Lumber Yard and is fastidious about her work. (That means she pays a great attention to detail.) It's fair to say that Rhoda doesn't find the work fulfilling, even if she's good at it, because she's far more interested in people. Calling her the town gossip would give the wrong impression, because she isn't interested in idle talk, spreading rumors, or stirring up drama. Rather, she's genuinely interested in the workings of people's lives and wants to know about everyone and hear their life stories. She has a very disarming quality to her, warm and caring, and she's more than willing to share about her personal life as well. As such, Rhoda knows a lot of secrets about a lot of people, though she'd be loathe to share if they were told in confidence.   While she spends a lot of time socializing, she is also a top-notch spinner of tales. She loves folktales and hearing stories about rugged life on the frontier. She mixes and matches parts of stories and creates characters based on different people in town and writes some wild fictions. I keep encouraging her to send them to a publisher in New York, but she gets shy and says they aren't so good. I have half a mind to swipe some from under her and send them myself.   Kids love her stories and the schoolteacher Maud Saxe allows the children to keep a binder full of Rhoda's handwritten tales, all of which conclude with a small though detailed illustration. While they're full of danger and monsters, Maud allows them because they always have some moral conclusion about living a good, straight life.   My favorites are the ones she writes for adults though and reads aloud at the Black Horse Tavern. They're strange and don't always make sense, but always feel true. They're dark and deal with desires and passions, jealousy and greed, and her endings usually aren't happy. Things lurk in the shadows and on the edge of towns and in the sordid depths of her character's minds. She illustrates these too but she won't show just anyone, afraid the religious folks would run her out of town. In terms who gets to read these treasures, I count myself as one of the lucky ones.
