Quaritus Plateau

"The chill in the air has seeped into my bones, a cold that no fire can banish. Our camp is eerily quiet now, the once vibrant discussions and hopeful plans reduced to silence and the occasional, haunted mutterings of the few who remain. The crystal spires loom over us, their twisted forms casting long, jagged shadows that watch our every move. I can still hear the screams, the wet, sickening sounds of flesh torn by those warped monstrosities. They came out of nowhere, ambushing us in the dead of night, their eyes gleaming with a malevolent intelligence.
We were not prepared. We thought we could study them, maybe even capture one alive, but their ferocity was beyond anything we had anticipated. Darnath and Ilara were the first to fall, their wards shattered like glass. We ran, abandoning the equipment and the carefully collected samples. Now, huddled together, we are a broken group, our spirits as shattered as our defenses. The plateau is a graveyard, and we are the unwelcome intruders. The path back to Arcreach is long and treacherous, and the supplies we have left will not last. We should never have come here. The Plateau does not welcome us, and it will take more of us if we linger. I write this by the dim glow of our last enchanted lantern, my hands trembling not from the cold but from the crushing weight of our failure. If anyone finds this, know that the Quaritus Plateau is not a place for those of this world. Turn back, and leave the dead to their silence.

Geography

The Quaritus Plateau, commonly referred to as the "Point of No Return," is a vast and treacherous mountain range that forms the entire northern edge of the Murian continent. Known for its formidable cliffs and peaks, the plateau is shrouded in an aura of mystery and danger. The Midnight Star's influence has warped the once unique ecosystem into a crystalline, Nebula-infested wasteland, dominated by the Midnight Horde.   The geography of the Quaritus Plateau is predominantly characterized by steep mountains, deep valleys, and sheer cliffs. Hidden within these treacherous formations are secluded pockets and valleys that have become hazardous due to the pervasive corruption of the Midnight Star. The terrain is harsh, with jagged rocks and unstable ground making traversal perilous.

Fauna & Flora

Before the Midnight Crisis, the Quaritus Plateau supported a diverse range of flora and fauna adapted to its rugged environment. Now, the region is a mix of crystalline growths and mutated vegetation, with alien plant life that thrives on Nebula energy. The fauna has similarly been altered, with many native species either driven to extinction or transformed into monstrous, Nebula-enhanced versions of their former selves. These mutated lifeforms form the basis for what is collectively known as the 'Midnight Horde'. They behave seemingly like wildlife until they encounter anything that has not been consumed by Nebula, after which they become immediately hostile and predatory towards these unaffected lifeforms.

Natural Resources

Despite its dangers, the Quaritus Plateau holds significant strategic and scholarly interest. The Midnight Shards embedded in the landscape are of great value to researchers studying the effects of Nebula energy. The proximity to the kingdoms of Arcreach and King's Chasm also makes the plateau a critical frontier for defensive operations against the incursions of the Midnight Horde.

History

The Quaritus Plateau was once the domain of the Eisir people, ancient hunters whose origins trace back to the Primal Age. The Eisir vanished mysteriously following the Xerasian Invasion in the Third Doom, leaving behind ruins and enigmatic artifacts that still pique the interest of scholars and adventurers alike. During the Midnight Crisis, the plateau became ground zero for one of the largest impacts of the Midnight Star, leading to its current corrupted state.   While the plateau is largely uninhabited due to its dangerous conditions, remnants of the Eisir culture occasionally resurface in the form of relics and ancient sites. The Kingdoms of Arcreach and King's Chasm keep a vigilant watch over the region, sending expeditions to monitor and contain the Midnight Horde's activity. The plateau is also rumored to house isolated pockets of survivors and outcasts who eke out a precarious existence amidst the crystalline spires.
