Uraka'val
A primarily subterranean people, the population of Uraka'val are primarily Drow, though a smattering of other underground-dwelling races may be found in the lower social structures of the empire. The classical idea of the powerful Drow matron rings true here, as well as the usual penchant for subterfuge and misdirection. Theirs is the only state to refuse the offerings of Gimmelan scholars to trade innovative technologies in exchange for entry to their territory; as such, their domain underground remains cloaked in mystery.
Emerging as a maritime power no later than 780 C.Y. (after seizing the port cities of Nerisa), Uraka'val is the only state that has been able to master crafting submersibles, a close-guarded secret that no amount of coin has yet uncovered. Sailors tell horror stories of night-raids by pirates and privateers when close to the waters that Uraka'val considers its own, where black-clad Drow might ambush drowsy sentries and proceed to slaughter the entirety of a ship’s crew with hardly a sound between them.
For all of the secrecy that surrounds Uraka'val, they are amenable to mutually beneficial trades, and hold an honor in their external dealings that may not always manifest within their internal politics. Merchants from other nations know that if they swallow their fear and seek to do business with the drow of Uraka'val, they have a better-than-even chance of coming away with materials or deals that would be unobtainable from anywhere else.
Values
Cunning is highly prized within Uraka'val society, and loyalty to one’s matron is often rewarded. The common citizen is expected to die to keep the secrets of their clan, and many are more than willing to do so. Their society is unflexibly matriarchal.
