Orlirast House
Boarding House (Poor)
Orlirast House. Among the locals, the term “an Orlirast” has come to mean something unslightly in the midst of an otherwise lovely collection, like a mushy brown apple in a basket of golden ones, or a link of garnets when one of them turns out to be a cheap paste phony.
Despite the fact that more than one petition has circulated among the neighbors seeking to forbid the place from operating here, Orlirast House is a necessity. Most of its residents are quite poor, but have work in the North Ward. Quite frankly, they do the kinds of work that the nobility and wealthy guildsfolk deem necessary but not worth paying much to do, and if they were all suddenly to disappear, those same folk who object to the “squalid rat-hive” (as one petition called the Orlirast) would suddenly find themselves having to make some very hard decisions about who they are hiring for those chores and how much they would have to pay.
Despite the sneering insistences of certain neighbors, the Orlirast is no rookery. The three- story building is well-worn with daily use, but its management is very fastidious about keeping it clean-particularly the outer facades.
Services & Goods
Single Rooms: Poor. The Orlirast House offers single rooms, of varying sizes (although all largely the same). They are uniformly unfurnished, and renters are expected to provide their own furnishings. Many of the individual pieces have been passed around from room to room, as one resident leaves but can't take pieces with them, and someone down the hall can use it. There is no food to be had on¬premises, so most residents stop off at some food-shop on their way home from work, or pop in at the Cliffwatch Inn for a bowl of stew and bread. Many have taken to popping across Endcliff Lane to handpies window at the Cliffsedge for quick meals.
Layout
The first floor has two entryways: one off of Endcliff Lane and another off of Tarsar's Street. A long, wide hall connects the two entrances, bisecting the floor, with smaller halls that split off, lined with doors to individual single rooms. The entryways have a small jakes passage and staircases to the upper floors, and the jakes passage off of the Tarsar's entry ends in a pump room, with a waterpump for residents.
By and large, the floors above adhere to this same layout, with the staircases having railing that opens to the entryway below. Many residents like to lounge on and socialize on these balconies, watching folk come and go. These balconies also lead to the jakes passages and pump rooms of the higher floors.
Because the levels where the jakes are located are halfway between the second and third floors, the upper floor does not have a jakes corridor. Instead, it has a small set of half-height crawlways, generally of no use or casual access whatsoever. Long-time residents know which of the jakes have hatches in the ceilings, which allow those in the stalls to stand on the jakes and climb up into the crawlway. More than once residents in trouble with the law have hidden out in these spaces before.
There are twenty-three rooms per floor.
Staff & Notable Folk
Ulgrus and Emrone Ander (both N Tethyrian human commoner), a married couple, run the Orlirast House. They are employed by the owner of the establishment (a wealthy would-be noble by the name of Astgurrylle Maryn, who would never show her face here). Ulgrus and Emrone tend to most of the management of the place, meeting new residents and enforcing the House's rules. They dwell in Room 23.
The half-orc Gildath (“Friendly Gil” to most of the residents; NG half-orc thug; increase his Charisma to 14) lives in Room 46, and is the House's other employee. He acts as a general handyman, tending to repairs in general. He was also technically hired as the household's “bullyjack” so the Anders didn't have to threaten or eject residents who didn't pay themselves, but the half-orc turned out to be so affable as to be largely non-threatening. Ulgrus likes him too much to fire him, however. Fortunately, Gildath makes friends quickly and often, and tends to use that to keep residents up to date instead (even lending them some coin himself when needed).
Story Seeds
The Horror Among Them: Unbeknown to the residents and staff a horror hunts among
them. A maurezhi (MTF) by the name of et'Skut-ilanax uses this place as a lair. By and large, it eats outside of the boarding house, consuming strangers across town and wearing their faces home. There are so many strangers that it's hard to keep track of those who keep to themselves, strange faces in and out. And when someone starts asking questions? Well then, it consumes another resident here- one who lives alone-and moves into their room.
