The Roam of Night
UNS-SL The Roam of Night (C2702) is an Evening-class corvette. Commissioned in 4882, in the interbellum period between the Cornucopia Crisis and the current wars, she was launched in 4892 and spent the years 4892-4912 traversing the Annamite Line in support of a myriad of DoJ/HR missions. In 4912, DoJ/HR Contingent HERMES-4912.378 embarked on a far-flung mission in support of the struggling Nuavaao settlement, arriving in 5190.
As part of the UND-DoJ/HR cooperative agreement, The Roam of Night is crewed by UND personnel and carries a pared-down 27-person DoJ/HR contingent, like all Evening-class corvettes. The UND crew, though still operationally (OPCON) and administratively (ADCON) under the authority of the UND command structure, are for the duration of UBMs/CAMs under the tactical control (TACON) of the DoJ/HR and the on-scene DoJ/HR Special Rapporteur, which for HERMES-4912.378 is Alistair Grant.
The Roam of Night is captained by Lieutenant Commander (Senior Grade) Djarnir Kurniast, having served in this position since 4907. Lt Yalavar Contradi serves as her logistics officer.
Propulsion
The Roam of Night's powerplant is its D-3He magneto-inertial confinement fusion reactor. In this system, the spherical fusion reaction is shaped through both inertial and magnetic confinement into a toroidal shape, using jets of hydrogen plasma along the edges of the reactor to shield both the crew and the reactor components, and is ejected out of the rear of the craft, passing through the craft's single exhaust bell. This system's waste heat is transferred via coil to circulating loops of molten sodium, which then power closed-cycle helium gas turbines, which in turn generates electricity for the ship.
To jump-start the ship's powerplant and account for thermodynamic energy loss, The Roam of Night maintains eight photovoltaic arrays tied to a bank of high-density sodium-potassium/gallium-indium liquid metal batteries.
Though The Roam of Night is a prewar design and retains its sodium coolant, in newer wartime designs, the Evening class' reactor has been modified to work with eutectic lead-bismuth alloy as a coolant, substantially increasing the safety of the reactor in the event of a catastrophic water leak in zero-g. These modifications, however, require the use of external heating in order to prevent the reactor from solidifying and rendering the ship inoperable.
Armor and defense
The Roam of Night mounts four 25mm rotary autocannons for point defense, but maintains no dedicated offensive armament, owing both to the Evening class' dedicated DoJ/HR support role and its small size. The corvette is also equipped with ablative armor sufficient to deflect small munitions, stellar debris and light lasers, as well as supplementary radiation shielding.
Communication Tools & Systems
The Roam of Night mounts a short-burst omninet hook as well as an encrypted VHF transceiver. Highly sensitive communications can be sent and received over tight-beam laser.
Sensors
The Roam of Night, like all Evening-class corvettes, is equipped with a phased-array track/scan radar suite. Not intended to work in conjunction with UND fleets, the Evening class cannot use fleet sensor networks to extend the range of its target locks. On the other hand, not having a dedicated fire control radar both saves space on the exterior of the hull (reducing its signature) and allows Evening class corvettes much-needed leeway in their power budgets. The ship also incorporates a powerful optical telescope and passive/active infra-red cameras, in addition to hardened versions of the usual orbital buoy trackers (OBT), inertial measurement units, gyroscopes and backup star tracking systems (STS) common to all exoatmospheric vessels in Union space. While considered quaint in the era of OBT/STS, the Evening class, like all Union ships, mounts a periscopic fixed-indexing sextant system for emergency astrogation.
Additional & auxiliary systems
The Roam of Night also, like all UND ships laid down in the post-Sanjak period, is equipped with a WINDOW GLOW high-volume predictive tracking computer with an integrated IFF transponder. Uncharacteristically for ships of her size, The Roam of Night, as with all Evening-class corvettes, mounts an NHP casket and can interface with line NHPs in legionspace.
Hangars & docked vessels
The Roam of Night has one dual-purpose mechanized chassis and cargo bay, as well as two light blister shuttles and sixteen single-use lander pods, arranged around the spine of the ship. The cargo area has one large-capacity airlock, which has an extendable gantry for use with the cargo shuttles. When in transit, one shuttle is kept mounted against the airlock for increased deployment speed upon arrival in the operating area.
