Shifters

The collective name given the a variety of sapient supernatural species who possess the ability to move between a human-like and animal-like appearance, without possessing wider shape-shifting abilities.

They are found throughout the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa.

The most common types of shapeshifter are:
Bouda or Qori Ismaris (hyena shifters)
Nagual (jaguar shifters)
Selkies (seal shifters)
Werebears
Werecoyote
Werehounds
Wereleopards
Werelions
Weretigers
Werewolves

There is considerable debate as to whether Bake-danuki are shifters, or an entirely sepperate species which can disguise itself as a human. Due to their trickster nature, no Bake-danuki has ever conclusively answered the question.

Extensive records of shifters who could take the form of giant domestic cats are found in Europe, but these have not been verified, and many cryptozoologists now believe these are actually old-world werepanthera created due to werewolf bites, while others dispute the stories as having any basis in truth at all.

It has been observed that all known shifters are medium sized or large carnivorous mamals (excepting the Kanima), with small carnivore families such as Herpestidae, Mephitidae, Procyonidae, and Ailuridae being the only families in the order Carnivora to not have an associated shifter.

Most (although not all) shifters can reproduce by biting or scratching a Human. In these cases, the human may not become a member of the same species as the one who bite them, with the form being more closely tied to the personality of the one who was bitten, which suggests a close link between the shifter species.
