Nymphs

Overview

As varied as nature, nymphs are the embodiments of Ogygia itself. Each individual nymph is a spirit bound to a particular formation of nature: for example, a single dryad is the manifestation of a single tree, not every tree. While sometimes human in shape, they may also resemble the body types of centaurs, satyrs, or tritons, and in all cases, their elemental heritage is obvious in their appearance: skin like bark or mossy growths; antlers in the shape of branches; barnacles and coral formations in place of hair; legs that taper into stalactites.
Most nymphs make their homes far from any humanoid settlements, and are often mistrustful of intruders into their territory; reasonably so, as the state of a nymph’s original formation and the nymph’s health are intrinsically linked. Intrusion into a nymph’s territory is often met with forceful eviction at least, or at worst elemental corruption into a thrall of the wilderness. Still, some individuals who treat the wilderness with care and respect earn the boon of a nearby nymph, granting anything from safe passage through dangerous territory to a lifelong blessing.

The most powerful of the nymphs are the Pans, embodiments of intangible aspects of nature. They serve as leaders of the nymphs and guardians of all Ogygia, and while they may be harmed or even killed, their respective manifestations never seem to fade. It is believed that they are reincarnations or aspects of a singular entity, for only one Pan manifests at a time through history. The current manifestations are the exception: Agrea and Nomia, the twin Pans who still share thoughts, memories, and feelings as if they were the same entity in two bodies.

While nymphs come in a wide variety, they have established some loose categorization and naming among themselves. Regardless of type, the vast majority of nymphs are unified and understand that each has a part to play in the natural world. Below is more information on the four main categories of nymphs:
Air Nymphs: Aurae, of breezes; Nephele, of clouds.
Land Nymphs: Alseids, of groves; Auloniads, of pastures and vales; Oreads, of mountains or caves.
Plant Nymphs: Anthousai, of flowers; Dryads, of trees; Kissiae, of ivy.
Water Nymphs: Naiads, of rivers, lakes, springs, and freshwater; Nereids, of oceans and seas.
