Imperial Remnant

"Imperial Remnant" is the name given to human settlements, civilizations, forces and even individuals operating within the Damocles Marches who pursue a purely xenocidal philosophy, as opposed to the more pragmatic approach of other human civilizations such as Outremer and The Three Cities. Many of the independent human civilizations in the Marches are loyal to the God-Emperor and profess human supremacy (particularly those following the Ghibbeline sub-cult of the Imperial Creed) but nevertheless find themselves opposed by the dogmatic and uncompromising Imperial Remnant.

Structure

The Imperial Remnant is not a single organization and is more of a philosophy. Despite sharing a common culture and outlook there is no unity and little co-operation and members of the Remnant are as likely to attack each other as xenos or independent human settlements. The most powerful military element owing allegiance to the Remnant's philosophy is the Brotherhood of the Wolf.

Culture

The Imperial Remnant rigidly holds to Imperial dogma - xenophobic, puritanical, repressive - but expresses it in an even more rigorous form than the Imperium at large. Isolated from the wider Imperium and surrounded by vile xenos and what they see as liberal, weak traitors to humanity the Imperial Remnant clings desperately to its dogma and enforces it with an iron fist, punishing any deviation - real or imagined - with a fanatical zeal.

History

The various Imperial Remnant elements all trace their origin to the end of the Damocles Crusade. When Inquisitor Kryptman ordered the withdrawal of forces, some were simply abandoned to fend for themselves because bringing them back was logistically impossible or too costly. Most of these became embittered to a greater or lesser extent against the Imperium and became independent human settlements or joined the T'au Empire as Gue'vesa. Others defied the order to withdraw and remained - the most famous of these were Renaud d'Châtillon and Fulk who founded the independent human realm of Outremer, but others became fanatically loyal to the Imperium's ideals if not its actions and became part of the Imperial Remnant. Finally, it is rumored high-ranking Imperial officials ordered some forces to remain and act as saboteurs, guerillas and fifth-columns among the xenos and even human powers of the Marches.

Military

The Imperial Remnant is not a unified nation but rather a loosely-aligned power bloc, and so does not have a formal military. However, the Brotherhood of the Wolf Astartes warband is a member of the Remnant, and there are other groups of former-Imperial military in the Damocles Marches.

Foreign Relations

The Imperial Remnant is opposed to all xenos powers - both independent and those allied with or part of the T'au Empire - and independent human settlements in the Damocles Marches. Eschewing even the minimal pragmatism of the wider Imperium, they are fanatically devoted to the xenophobia of the Imperial Cult and regard anyone not perfectly aligned with their interpretation of the Imperial Creed (including other Imperial Remnant groups) as a traitor worth only of destruction.
