Alikataam River
River of the great southern mountain
Geography
The source of this river is located within the mountains surrounding Alikataam, also known as the great southern mountain. High precipitation at these heights is the main reason for Alikataam River to exist. It descends to the west and slowly turns to the north, crossing the tropical rain forest near the center.
Before reaching the Oalmer village, this river has a second path leading to the west. This smaller mouth of Alikataam River is not a delta and there is no information on how it was formed. At this point the water flows more slowly and the river gets slightly thinner.
Localized Phenomena
It has been a source of water ever since the first Followers of Oal-Mer founded their first village (Oalmer). Because of this, fishes in the river seem to stay away from the Kukai settlements, even though they are not a source of food for the kukai. There is a local belief in Oalmer which says that fishes were probably hunted by the Pakai and that they might see the kukai as similar predators.
History
Some legends written in the Kukai Tueshalik describe rivers as the "tears" of great mountains, in this case, Alikataam. It is believed that this and the northern "mountain", Alikamui, were brothers. When the second fell into an eternal slumber, the brother of the south cried in joy and its tears reached the ocean, where the souls of both mountains would be forever bound. This is the story of how the Alikataam River was born.
The Kukai found this river after traveling south from The sacred lake, after the first appearance of the god Oal-Mer.
