Kukai

The followers of Oal-Mer

The only humanoid race that currently exists in Pakali-Pakamuut. At first glance, the kukai look just like humans, although they have various traits that makes them different.   The kukai are rarely interested or talented in magic and/or science. The few kukai that may specialize on either one of these fields are the Bamuur , the Bam and sometimes the Nur and Nurikai.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Although they share most of their biological traits with humans, the kukai have better health and overall constitution. This is mostly like because of their constant use of the sacred water ever since the foundation of Oalmer. This also explain their immunity to some poisons and resistance to most common illness.   The kukai are most of the time strong as any human, but with a higher potential to increase their strength. However, this trait comes with a downside, shortening the lifespan of the kukai. But some exceptions may happen, being one of these rare cases the legendary champion, Onira.   Another trait for the kukai is related to fertility; it became harder for female kukai to become pregnant, with almost no chance of getting twins or triplets. In order to have children, both male and female kukai need to make a ritual and eat a specific type of food, usually for a whole month. Nobody really knows why or when this happened, although some say it is a "curse" originated from the pakai conflict.

Growth Rate & Stages

An average kukai may live for at least 120 years; usually 30 years of youth, 80 years of healthy adulthood and only 10 years of old age. Some of the kukai may live twice as long, although it's quite rare. Adulthood is the longest period of a kukai's lifespan, and its duration varies depending on genetics and the lifestyle of each individual. This contrasts with the fact that, once it reaches old age, an elder kukai may live for even less than 10 years.   Biologically, a kukai is considered an adult after reaching its 20 years. In social terms, however, a kukai is considered by others as an adult when it finally chooses a profession, with some exceptions; for example, kids who follow family tradition and keep their parent's profession. Both factors, age and decision, are equally important for a kukai to be considered as an adult, or a more "mature" young person.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The kukai consider themselves vegan, since they no longer hunt animals or make any use of them. Still, they may cook and eat some types of bugs from time to time. In general, the kukai diet consists of fruits, vegetables and a very specific kind of fungi (quite similar to mushrooms).   The kukai are used to wake up early in the morning, waiting for the Bat to walk around with their baskets to distribute fruits and veggies. For the rest of the day, or if they didn't make it in time for breakfast, they walk to the closest bata house to get their daily meals; either breakfast, lunch or dinner.   Most of the fruits within Kukai Amut are highly nutritious and, according to the kukai, "blessed by the land". This is why most of the kukai eat their food without any sort of cooking. This doesn't mean that kukai cuisine doesn't exist, in fact it is considered so important that most of the best (prepared) meals are served only during tournaments and celebrations.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

The kukai have no facial hair, except for small beards (goatee). Most of the kukai have either black or brown hair, with the latter being less common than the first one.

Average Physique
The kukai are almost identical to humans in their appearance, although they have their differences.   Most of the kukai have brown skin, although light-brown and dark skin tones are also common. It is extremely rare for a kukai to be born with white skin unless both parents share this trait. Black and brown hair are the most common, with both males and females having a chance to grow very long hair. However, the kukai don't have body or facial hair, except sometimes a beard on males.

Author's Notes

  • The kukai are difficult to roleplay. It requires a fair amount of knowledge about their culture and traditions to be properly interpreted. It is recommended that players who are new to the kukai lore choose a different race or species for their characters.
  • The word "kukai" literally translates as "soul" but is mostly used to mean "person". As the kukai learned more about the human race, mostly from Rebeka Mer, the word "kukai" would also be used to mean "kukai race".
