Nur

Keepers of the utopia

The Nur are faithful servants of Oal-Mer and their people, the Kukai. In a way, they act as governors, taking care of organizing labor and overall society. But they are also priests, teachers, advisors, vocational and spiritual guides. The Nur work hard to keep the kukai utopia alive.   "Love, devotion and faith. Those are the virtues of the Nur, minds and souls of our culture, the ones to preserve our legacy and build our future." -Oath of the Nur-

Career

Qualifications

Though there are three types of Nur, all of them share the same basic knowledge, set of skills and overall traits which makes them the Nur.
  • Reading and writing
  • Basic history knowledge
  • Ritual for the Sacred water
  • Understanding the octal and decimal numeral systems
  • Devotion to Oal-Mer and the Kukai
  • Aptitudes for social service
  • Patience

Career Progression

It is said that "no Nur starts young". The Kukai who take on this role usually do so after becoming adults. This contrasts with the common practice of choosing a profession during youth or as a way to "become a true kukai adult". The process to become a Nur usually goes like this:
  1. Learning how to read and write
  2. Reading the Kukai Tuexalik
  3. Learning (or practicing) octal and decimal numeral systems
  4. Assisting other Nur with their rituals
  5. Meditating and praying
  6. Performing rituals
  7. Choosing a Nur specialty
  8. Learning universal language (if possible)

Perception

Purpose

The Nur are considered the wisest and most spiritual Followers of Oal-Mer, devoted to the god and their people. Generally speaking, they are the ones in charge of cultural preservation, from ink and paper and all the way up to education, religious rituals and social organization. They are good personal and professional advisors. In a way, they serve as governors and priests, though it isn't rare to see them working together with other professions to compensate for their lack of workforce, which is also common for the Mer and the Lar.

Social Status

Some Kukai consider the Nur as leaders, not only because they are in charge of social organization, but because they are always willing to help others. In addition to their devotion, the knowledge and hard work of the Nur has given them the respect of all other professions. This is why some people considered it kind of rude to ask a Nur for a favor, specially because they will most likely say yes, even when they are busy.

Demographics

This is a fairly common occupation. About 9-10% of the Kukai work in the Nur profession, of which almost 80% are located in the capital village of Oalmer. The remaining 20% of the Nur work in the villages of Pukamut, Kukanpuke and Amutikali. However, some of them may travel to the smaller villages during holidays or other celebrations.

History

After the first appearance of Oal-Mer during the Pre-Classical Era, it is said that the god walked with the Kukai using the body of their prophet, Oal. Back then, only a few of the kukai were able to completely understand their deity's guiding words. Because of this, the kukai used the name of the ancient Nur Tribe to name a new profession, one meant for those "closer to the god". They would work to preserve culture and the legacy of the Followers of Oal-Mer.

Operations

Tools

The Nur have learned different skills over the years, and their profession is no longer limited to preaching and telling stories. That is why they may require tools and items to help them do their job, with the most important ones being the following:
  • Nur clothes: The iconic design for the Nur clothing is easy to spot, allowing other kukai to quickly find a Nur when seeking for their advice. It also represents the discipline and union among kukai of this profession.
  • Containers: Used to carry the Sacred water acquired from The sacred lake. This water is given by the Nur to the participants of a Fight Ritual.
  • Ink and paper: This is what they need to preserve the kukai legacy and culture, as well as to keep track of historical events. It is also useful for administration purposes.

Workplace

Although the Nur usually work in different places of a village, most of the preaching, writing and educating takes places in a Nur House. This building is similar to a monastery, as it houses the kukai working in this profession. However, most of the structure is meant to preserve the documents kept within. It also serves as a landmark and gathering point, more specifically for those who seek knowledge or guidance; children, kukai without a profession, travelers, etc.

Provided Services

In short, the Nur dedicate their lifes to preserve the Kukai utopia. But over the years this task has become more difficult, forcing the Nur to adapt and specialize in different kind of skills. Overall, any Nur would be meant to do the following:
  • Give spiritual and vocational advice
  • Perform the ritual for the Sacred water
  • Read and write for others
  • Help other kukai (professions) in need
There are also three specializations for the Nur. These don't necessarily forbid the Nur from working in other areas of their profession. Instead, they show mastery over certain skills or knowledge, making it easier for them to help with more specific affairs. The specializations are the following:
  • Education: These are lore-masters, experts in kukai history and keepers of knowledge. They usually rewrite older texts in order to preserve their contents, make them more available and update them with newer versions of the language.
  • Administration: They are in charge of organizing labor, keeping track of the communal barter and monitoring overall production. They receive feedback from the education and communication specialists.
  • Communication: More focused on performing rituals, preaching, planning holidays and keeping traditions alive. They constantly visit other kukai to help them with their affairs, having a closer look on the changes in society.

Dangers & Hazards

There are no real threats or risks in this profession. Nevertheless, it is a busy job which could prove to be quite stressful for the unprepared kukai. That is why all the Nur must know how to meditate and prepare themselves on a mental and spiritual level.
