Vernon Dursley
Vernon grew up in Belfast, Ireland and married Petunia Evans in 1862 when he was a business student. However, hard times in Belfast pushed him to the shipbuilding firm of Harland and Wolff. Their first child, Dudley, was born in 1866 to increasing poverty, and by the time their second child, Rose, was born, the family was scraping just to survive, having spent Petunia's entire dowry on rent and food.
Petunia's inheritance of her sister's money allowed Vernon to rise both at home and at work. He was promoted to overseeer of construction, then manager at Harland of Wolff before transferring over to construction manager for White Star Line. This advance included allowing him to start his days leisurely at 10 and leave work promptly at 5 pm, when he would often join his coworkers for smoking and cards until supper.
Vernon was suddenly arrested in August 1881 on charges of larceny when it was discovered that he'd been purchasing cheap materials for the S.S. Arabic and pocketing the profits (PS - Chap 3). This was later revealed to be a frame job by Remus Lupin as punishment for abusing Harry (PS Chap 5).
