The Cobalt Sanctuary
The Cobalt Sanctuary is an elite order of monks in service to the gods Zerrof and Penguin. The Cobalt Sanctuary originally served Bahamut, and were a member in The Morning Sun during The Blood Crusades, where they primarily worked to provide shelter to refugees. Since the events of The Age of Mortality, however, their former patron is now deceased. Because of his connections with the sanctuary's former leader, Zorkul Clalthicul, , Penguin was able to convert the sanctuary into followers of Zerrof and himself instead. Most members of the monastery are Dragonborn, though they accept those of all races.
Structure
The sanctuary is a small organization, and as such has a very flat structure. There are only four levels of authority, and anyone at higher levels can issue orders to those lower than them.
- The leader. Currently Hawk.
- Commanders: a small handful of talented individuals. These people were usually trained personally by either another commander or Hawk himself. Commanders have elaborate tattoos. The designs very, but usually include an arrow on the forehead.
- Officers: Officers are commanders-in-training. Officer is never intended as a permanent assignment; after a year or two, officers are either promoted to commander or demoted to guardians. Officers will sometimes have tattoos as well, but they are generally more subdued.
- Guardians: This catch-all rank includes everything from the cleaning staff to soldiers and adventurers. Officially no guardian can order another, but usually guardians will defer to those more experienced than them. Guardians are assigned work on an as-needed basis. As such, even the most respected guardians occasionally find themselves on janitorial duty.
Public Agenda
The purpose of the Cobalt Sanctuary is to protect those that cannot protect themselves. This definition is intentionally vague, and members are generally allowed a great deal of flexibility in determining who does or does not need their protection. The sanctuary engages in charity of all kinds, but focuses primarily on sheltering refugees and fighting off invading forces. Recently, they have been focused primarily on helping to shelter refugees and otherwise control the Moon Plague.
Assets
The sanctuary itself is a large monastery located in Kilead. They live modest lifestyles, but this is not for a lack of resources. The monastery is well-funded. They were paid well for their efforts during The Blood Crusades, and local governments will usually reward them for their efforts. They also frequently receive charitable donations from those they have previously aided. The sanctuary tries to avoid wasteful spending, but will not hesitate to dedicate considerable resources when the situation demands it.
History
The sanctuary was originally founded on Feb 27th, 711 by some retired Wardens. Goblins were a constant threat at the time, and so they also taught self-defense to their refugees in an effort to help fortify the town against future goblin raids. When The Blood Crusades began, the Sanctuary expanded dramatically in response to the vampiric threat. They dispatched sizable rescue teams to war-torn villages, and shepherded the refugees back to Kilead. Eventually they even joined The Morning Sun, and helped to drive back the invaders. Their leader at the time, Zorkul Clalthicul, was originally a member of an adventuring party known as The Assorted Crusaders. He showed great bravery during the war, and so upon its completion the commanders unanimously voted to make him the new leader.
During The Age of Mortality the senior leadership died, including both Zorkul Clalthicul and Lucan Pavalur. Shortly after the age was over these two were replaced with Hawk and his wife Dolphin.
