Archduke of Avernus (a.k.a. the sound of shuffling a deck of cards)
A very eccentric kenku bard. Since the death of Sconce, he is now effectively leader of The Assorted Crusaders. He and his party served as leadership of The Morning Sun during The Blood Crusades.
With help from The Celestial/Murderers, he recently overthrew Zariel to become ruler of Avernus. At the time, this made him the youngest of the gods.
Shortly after his ascension, he actually disavowed his divinity as a negotiating ploy to get out of the Preservation Proclamation. With this little loophole and help from the Hands of Fate gathered in Vigrid, he broke several gods free from the Preservation Proclamation, allowing them to slay Iapetus and end The Age of Mortality.
Because of this, Penguin holds remarkable popularity and acceptance despite his position ruling the highest circle of The nine hells. The rise of Penguin brought with it a sort of revolution of evil, in which the public at large has become far more accepting of evil ideals. He also has powerful alliances with his compatriots in the fight against Iapetus, including Mazu, Zerrof, and Olidammara.

Penguin seeks primarily to protect himself and his people, by any means necessary. He also seeks to empower The nine hells by making them all around more "accessible". He believes evil has an image problem, and he wants to rectify that by being the most charismatic evil bastard he can be.

Personal history
Penguin was born in Rainy Grove, where his flock raised him to be a hunter. In the year 709, however, Penguin discovered that his parents were plotting to steal something from Bhaal. He was unable to do anything about this himself, however he struck a deal with Izzik where he would put himself in slavery for five years and Izzik would do "whatever it takes" to stop his parents from following through with their insane plan. Izzik held up his end of the bargain by enslaving the entire flock.
Unfortunately, when his tribe was enslaved by Dispater, penguin was taken with them. Penguin kept himself busy during his slavery, though, earning his namesake and serving as a ferryman on the River Styx.
He volunteered to serve in one of the most dangerous jobs available: being a ferrymen on the River Styx. For mortals this work has a life expectancy of two or three days, but Penguin performed exceptionally well. He learned much from his passengers, and even found true love when he met Ophelia. Over the course of a year became a minor celebrity and gained the attention of Dispater.
Shortly after Penguin earned his freedom, Dispater "rewarded" him for his service by giving him his own parents as slaves. Penguin did not want this, but fears freeing them would be a disrespect to Dispater and therefore result in their death. Shortly after this, Sconce helped him travel back to the prime material plane where he joined The Assorted Crusaders and went on to participate in The Blood Crusades. Having proven his worth, Penguin then went on to become an official ambassador of Dispater, and traveled the world wheeling and dealing to benefit his master.
Even before his promotion, though, penguin had a plot to ascend to godhood. He recently achieved this goal with the help of The Celestial/Murderers.
Employment
Dispater brought Penguin into his service, where he acted as a low level negotiator and then swiftly worked his way up the ranks to become a diplomat. This success was due to a combination of exceptional talent and extroardinary ambition; Penguin's plot to become ruler of Avernus was intriguing to his master, and with effort he even got Dispater to grant him his freedom, and permission to marry Ophelia. He met Sconce shortly after his marriage, and spent a few years adventuring to grow more powerful.

Penguin and Vecna were allies during The Age of Mortality, though the details of this arrangement were never made public. This agreement came to an end when Vecna died in Ragnarok, thus reigniting the current war between Gehenna and The nine hells.
