Vanya's hometown, a flyspeck in the Balinoks without much claim to fame beyond goats. Most people live and die in Barsana without seeing anything beyond maybe a few surrounding villages at the harvest festival, unless they're big-shot traders who can take their woolen goods to Krezk. Vanya, naturally, wanted much more than that provincial life.
