King's Ranger Halt O'Carrick
Physical Description
His eyes are dark and piercing, deep set under heavy dark eyebrows. His face is thin and he has a dark beard.
Mental characteristics
While riding with
Will following their defeat of a gang of
Moondarkers Will mentions to him that he accidentally destroyed his draft of the speech he was going to give at
Horace and
Cassandra's wedding. In their following discussion, Will tells Halt that he wants them to know
"that if they ever need me, if they ever need to call on me I will be there no matter what." Halt remembered that, and following
Alyss' death and Will's resultant depression, Halt used that to help Will. When
Maddie began causing trouble for Horace and Cassandra, Halt proposed she be sent to Will to be trained as a
Ranger. He, accompanied by
Gilan, delivered Horace and Cassandra's letter to Will requesting his help with Maddie. True to character, as Halt knew he would, Will answered their call for help even when he was at his lowest.
"if they ever need me, if they ever need to call on me I will be there no matter what."
He met
Pritchard when he was 16, late in the year 624. He trained with Pritchard for three years before he fled Clonmel for Araluen. Meaning, when he received his Silver Oakleaf with only three out of the expected five years worth of training.
Halt unknowingly is responsible for Morgarath's downfall and saving Araluen. When he first met Crowley, Crowley wanted to give up after finding out Duncan was raiding Picta and harassing villages, thinking he couldn't get a Royal Warrant. Halt was the one to motivate him once again. Had he not been there, the Renegade rangers might not have formed. Duncan never would have been freed and Morgarath would have captured the throne. Also, he nominated Crowley as leader of the Renegade Rangers, leading him to become commandant.
Personality Characteristics
Halt is fond of horses and will go out of his way to care for them, even the horses of strangers. He is also fond of dogs.
Halt is very forward-thinking for his time with his regard for women. This is largely due to his relationship with
Pauline DuLacy,
Senior Courier and head of
Redmont Fief's Diplomatic Service. His respect for her courage and high intelligence helped shape his outlook on women. From Halt's point of view, the more beautiful a woman is the more likely people are to disregard her intelligence and capability, which he thinks is a big mistake, as Pauline has proven.
Baron Arald's wholehearted respect and faith in Pauline, as well as
King Duncan's faith in the
Diplomatic Corps at large, likely also played a huge part in shaping Halt's, as well as many of the other
Rangers' (many of whom who have likely worked in tandem with couriers before) views of women.
It was he who nominated
Princess Madelyn to become the first female
Ranger Apprentice.
Social
He has a faint Hibernian accent. When he is in a bad mood he pay’s close attention to his grammar.
Mentor and Surrogate-Father (Vital)
History
Halt was the one who had brought Will to Redmont's ward, and had watched Will grow up. Seeing potential in Will, he offered to take him as an apprentice.
At first Halt was stern and unemotional towards Will. Will had found him to be grim and almost frightening at times. Deep down Halt had a deep affection for Will.
The first time they really showed their care for each other was during "the boar hunt," when Will was nearly killed while protecting Horace from a boar. When Halt saved Will from the boar, they embraced, Will looking to Halt for protection.
After the events at the ruins of Castle Gorlan, Will was offered a place in Battle School bust chose to stay apprenticed to Halt. That was when Will first saw him smile, cementing their father-son like relationship.
