Wendell is the oldest son of Trisha Hales and born from her affair with her husband's brother, Jack Hales. His rights to the Hales name was kept a secret for much of his life, living under the lie that his mother had died when he was young, but just the same, he was resented by his uncle Gregory Hales and regarded as a threat. Being the eldest child in the family, their fortune, titles, and land would rightfully pass to him, skipping over Gregory's children, Jace Hales, Kain Hales, and Gerad Hales.
For most of his life, he was regarded as a lesser part of the family and not permitted to stay in the Hales house by Gregory, with much of his resentment toward him imitated by Gregory's second child, Kain, who would often use his position as a 'legitimate' child over Wendell. Kain being the exception to the other two brothers, Jace and Gerad always got along quite well with him, and Jace himself playing an important role in uncovering and revealing Wendell's birthright.
