Session 10 Notes
Recorded April 13, 2024
General Summary
- Before Phil' arrival we talk about what additional items we are going to leave behind.
- Augustus Larkin offers to leave behind a crate of champaign he was holding onto to celebrate our arrival at the temple.
- Even with the tents and the champaign we need to decide what else to leave behind.
- We are kind of leaning toward leaving rations behind because we can forage and hunt for food if we begin to run short, leaving behind cold weather gear is not a great plan because the temperature would become more dangerous, more quickly.
- In the morning Larkin looks a bit more sallow and exhausted.
- While we are walking, John takes point and is leading us through the highlands.
- Albert runs across a cute little bear cub and he begins to approach it. John realizes that it is a baby bear and is able to prevent Albert from doing something silly. John has definitely seen tracks for mom. It starts to follow Albert around so he kicks some dirt at it and runs away.
- A dead on luck roll prevents him from become bear lunch and we rush off away from where the bear was.
- While walking Nigel talks with Larkin about his background and every time Nigel tries to talk to Larkin about his past he looks like he is trying to remember something but trails off. He then quickly tries to change the subject.
- Nigel does learn he is not a full on British Citizen, but he is actually from Kenya.
- He is the black sheep of the family as he was supposed to take over the railway business, but he wasn't really interested in that.
- Going back far enough, to his youth he has good recollection, but after leaving home his memory gets spotty.
- Late in the evening on March 26, 1921, we start to think about making camp and we all hear a very loud gun shot.
- Cillian, Albert, and Father are about to orient it to just on the other side of the ridge we are climbing.
- Cillian, Mickey, and Albert stalk up the ridge while the rest of the group takes up defensive positions around the mules and the supplies.
- Getting to the top of the ridge, looking off in the distance there is a guy with an alpaca that is leaning over something on the ground. Cillian is able to see an unarmed man who is kneeling over a much smaller person.
- Albert rushes to get the doc while Cillian and Mickey move toward the two figures.
- As they get up closer the man notices us and he raises a rifle and tries to fire it, realizes that he is out of ammo and starts to reload as Cillian tries to diffuse the situation.
- Doc takes off running to try and get there and he ultimately arrives with Jesse and Father Fury.
- We are able to convince him to let Doc and Father Fury close enough to try and help.
- The Doc finds that the wound on this kids chest is circular, very familiar, and lamprey like. The kid looks wan and pale. Doc is able to bind him up, staunch the bleeding, and get some fluids into him.
- The kid's dad is very grateful just keeps saying so.
- Through Jesse Hughes, we try and find out what happened and which way the creature went.
- Says they were out searching for a baby alpaca and they were attacked by a man and a woman. They were European, they went off in the direction that we are heading.
- They appeared out of nowhere and asking for help. The woman grabbed his son and her face distorted, turning into a Kharisiri, and she latched onto his son.
- Father Fury can tell that the dad is on the brink of a mental break. He has seen something that shook him to his core.
- This man has offered to allow us to shelter at his farm overnight.
- Says they were out searching for a baby alpaca and they were attacked by a man and a woman. They were European, they went off in the direction that we are heading.
- John and Nigel meet up with the rest of us and we try and decide what to do. If we are going to follow the tracks we are going to need to do it right now, passing on the offer.
- We tell the guy that we are going to head on, tracking the people that injured his child, and he seems relieved.
- John is able to pick up the trail and we begin to track them to the south-southwest, exactly in the direction we are heading.
- John is frequently picking up new signs as we move along, tracking two sets of tracks.
- one is a hard soled shoe and the other appears to be barefoot.
- John is frequently picking up new signs as we move along, tracking two sets of tracks.
- We are able to follow the tracks for about two hours. We decide to find a good place to camp and we are able to do so and begin to set a camp.
- We set up a watch:
- Cillian and the Doc
- Mickey, Nigel, and Elias
- Elias doesn't show up for watch so Nigel goes to check on him. He finds him just staring off into space with his pipe halfway to his mouth.
- He seems off, confused, out of it, but the more that Nigel talks he does kind of pull himself together, but during watch he does tend to look at his tent quite often.
- He is still skeptical, but is starting to feel like he is more open to the possibility that something other than just a death cult.
- Albert and John
- Boris and Father Fury
- The night passes without incident and John is able to pick up the tracks again and we set off.
- The terrain gets more mountainous as we continue to move along with the tracks.
- John surmises that our quarry didn't stop overnight. As the tracks lead into the valley onto ground that is much harder, and doesn't take tracks as well.
- Larkin tells us that we are looking for a plateau, but we are still heading in the right direction.
- A few hours into the morning, we spot two figures in the distance. The seem to be down into the valley below us as we are traveling along a ridgeline above.
- We decide to head our way down to the valley floor to try and keep out of sight of the creatures ahead.
- As we continue on, every so often, John does see signs of their passing.
- We get to a point in the valley where the way ahead forks, Larkin points to a plateau in the distance, Larkin believes that the temple sits on the plateau, and suggests the trail to the left may be any easier journey.
- He coughs a lot while speaking, it seems to be getting worse as the days go on. Larkin insists that it is just leftover symptoms of Malaria. The doc notices that the veins on the back of his hands are dark and thick, and unhealthy looking.
- John is able to tell that the tracks of the two figures we are tailing go to the left.
- He also knows that the trail to the left will pose some difficulty for the mules.
- Albert and Mickey sneak forward to scout out the trail to see what lies ahead.
- The wind their way up to the point where they cannot see the rest of the expedition and they cannot see the plateau anymore. The think they are about halfway up the trail and they decide to continue on. They come around the peak and they get to where the can see there is a trail that winds down onto the plateau where they see some strange structures on the surface of the plateau.
- The see two figures climb up on a man-made flat surface amongst the buildings, there is a man and a woman. They both look like they have distended bellies. The man walks forward while the woman looks around, to the middle of the platform. He leans forward and retches all over this platform, vomiting some horrid white substance out of his mouth. This stream just continues for over half-minute.
- They then trade places.
- The substance flows down into a crack in the stone slab.
- The figures then disappear as they climb down the other side of the structure they were standing on.
- Albert an Mickey rush back down the trail to try and get with the others.
- Boris mentions that it reminds him of birds feeding their young.
- Father Fury knows that if it isn't feeding, it is definitely gathering something, if they are gathering something for something that is trapped. He thinks that it fits with the legend they have heard. (See Session 7 Notes for the details.)
- We try to lead some mules up the trail, it takes some more time than we had hoped, but we all get there safely.
- We make our way down and around down to the plateau.
- We notice an odd smell, we initially attribute it to Larkin, but there is a heavy smell of rot. There are tons of flies.
- John and Doc notice that the flies are everywhere and they are all blowflies. There shouldn't be this many flies, its horrible.
- There is a odd sound, a moaning sound echoing around the plateau.
- The sun begins to set as we end the session.
Session 10:
Ranch Dressing
Upon opening my eyes my first sensation was an overmastering desire to visit the rock temple; a desire which grew every instant, yet which I automatically sought to resist through some emotion of fear which operated in the reverse direction.~H. P. Lovecraft
