Personal history

Jackson Elias is best know as an author. His writings characterize and analyze death cults. His best-known book is Sons of Death, exposing modern day Thuggee cults in India. All of his books illustrate how cults manipulate the fears of their followers. Insanity and feelings of inadequacy characterize death cultists; feelings for which they compensate by slaughtering innocents to make themselves feel powerful or chosen. Cults draw the weak minded, though cult leaders are usually clever and manipulative. When fear of a cult stops, the cult vanishes. Elias' published works include:
  • Skulls Along the River (1910) ~ Exposes headhunter cults in the Amazon basin.
  • Masters of the Black Arts (1912) ~ Surveys supposed sorcerous cults throughout history.
  • The Way of Terror (1913) ~ Analyzes systematization of fear through cult organization; warmly review by George Sorel.
  • The Smoking Heart (1915) ~ First half discusses historical Mayan death cults; the second half concerns present day Central American death cults.
  • Sons of Death (1918) ~ Modern day Thuggees; Elias infiltrated the cult and wrote a book about it.
  • Witch Cults of England (1920) ~ Summarizes covens in nine English counties; interviews practicing English witches; Rebecca West thought some of the material trivial and overworked.
  • The Black Power (1921) ~ Expands up The Way of Terror and includes some material on Asian and African death cutls; includes interviews with several anonymous cult leaders.
  • The Hungry Dead (1923) ~ Exposes te modern day survival of a Peruvian and Bolivian death cult from the time of the conquistadors. (It omits many of the weirder details that those who accompanied Elias on his researches may remember, presenting the cult of the Kharisiri as purely human evil.

In Peru Jackson revealed to the Investigators he was concerned about the actual intent of Larkin and his mission to find "fortune and glory" and a dig site in the highlands of Peru. He introduced some of the party to Professor Nemesio Sánchez at the historic archeology museum. Jackson managed to free the investigators from being locked in the basement but missed out on seeing any of the attacks that followed while seeking medical help for the Professor.   After arriving in Puno, Jackson left in order to track down a contact in the area. A native of the Aymara people indeginous to the area, named Nayra. He led the investigators to a floating island in the middle of Lake Titicaca where the wise woman was hiding from the Kharisiri. This time, Jackson was witness to violence of these creatures, though he again missed seeing them first hand.   The journey from there to the Peruvian Pyramid led to a confrontation with Augustus Larkin. A fight that Elias did help resolve. After the fight he insisted that something be done to make sure the death cult would not continue to kill innocnet Peruvians. He braved the tunnels under the pyramid until things could be set back to the way they were... according to the information obtained from Professor Sanchez.
After completing his latest book, The Hungry Dead, Jackson looked to celebrate. First he sent a puzzle book to each of the investigators. And second he invited them to a symposium in New Orleans.   When the investigators arrived, Jackson was no where to be found. A series of clues led the party to discover Jackson attended a strange performance and may have been caught up in nefarious business. It turned out Jackson was again trying to save innocents. He was being secretive and held out hope his friends would be able to follow the clues to find him and assist in rescuing those less fortunate. While he was present for the final confrontation, he escaped without directly witnessing the horror beneath the vault.   Before the symposium could even finish one day, Jackson has a lead on his next book. While his friends remained behind to celebrate, Elias headed off for Austria to obtain a contact at an auction.
Floyd Musgrove received an unexpected radiogram from Jackson in January of 1925. Responding to the requests, a few of his friends arranged to meet up with him at the Hotel Chelsea in New York City. Concerned about his strange behavior on the phone earlier that day, the investigators forced their way into his room to discovered him murdered and the culprits just leaving the scene of the crime.
