High Shield

The title granted to the member of the Order of Hiega who wields Manastorm to maintain peace in Shudan and, in particular, to maintain peace between Shudan and Nobumori.

History

Originally the title held by the head of the Order of Hiega in Nanganato.
In S87 this position was held by Ota Amari, to whom the Manastorm was willed after the death of Kansa the Eastwind. Ota in turn passed on the sword along with the title of High Shield to her own successor Coda Highshield. The title and the sword passed on together for over a century.
In S219 the sword and position as the head of the order was passed on to a cleric by the name of Endo Kyuichi. Endo worked tirelessly towards peace from the main temple of the Order in Nanganato, but felt the sword was wasted in his presence.
In S222 Endo passed Manastorm to Ueki Ai, a high paladin of the Order, so that she could put it to use in defense of the people. Endo remained the head of the Order, but by now the title had become so tightly coupled with the sword, that people thought of the High Shield as the one who wielded the sword rather than the head of the Order. Endo thought that was more fitting anyway, and officially passed the title to her. From that point forward it was awarded to the wielder of the sword, who was only occationally the head of the Order.
