Agriculture
The bread and butter of Sanctuary. Literally. Without them, Sanctuary would starve and become a desiccated husk of itself. They tend the crops, bring in the harvest, and supply the raw ingredients for life to keep going in the town.
Some citizens of Sanctuary might believe that Agriculture has the easy end of the stick when it comes to job allocation - they would be very, very wrong. Agriculture is a varied collection of all different types of people, factions, and job descriptions. Nutritionists, biologists, botanists, researchers, farmers, drivers, just to name a few have all congregated underneath the rainbow umbrella of Agriculture. This means, fortunately or not, that the chain of command is rather different to that of most other departments. But one thing is for sure… There is no ‘normal’ work-day here!
Those underneath Research exist only at the labs in Hospital Campus, working around the clock to make sure that experiments are going well, harvest is being produced, and advances are being made. In Produce they cultivate, transport, and process the food developed by Research and Farmers, many drivers taking on the graveyard shift in order to get deliveries done in a timely manner. Overtime is not optional. The most interesting part of Agriculture is possibly how they treat the Farmers. Farmers are a unique bunch with a very unique set of skills - they are strong, nimble, resistant, oh, and an amazing shot! They are territorial and are paid to do so! Their work is, quite literally, their lives. Everyone in Agriculture knows this and, despite the jokes they want to make, no one really makes them because, well, who’d want to piss off the only guy in town who is allowed a sawn-off shotgun!
Overall, Agriculture is possibly the most well respected out of all of the Sanctuary departments. Everyone is aware of its importance to the survival of everyone in town and, due to this, most of the other departments go out of their way to make things a little bit easier for them to handle when times are stressful. This is also because their leader, Nerduilye Evander, is one of the newest members of the Department Heads, and her promotion was a rather unusual one indeed! If Agriculture needs something done then the rest of the departments, and Sanctuary citizens no doubt, are going to bend and break just to fix the problem.
Agriculture has a close relationship with Security, primarily because it is them that deal with the weaponry that is provided to the Farmers. Each Farmer is allowed two ranged firearms - one shotgun style and the other a pistol style, just in case the shotgun doesn’t work. In regards to trespassers and critters, it is law that Farmers must fire at least one warning shot then give three minutes in order for those Trespassing to leave the property. If they don’t, then they are within their rights to shoot to maim - or kill, should they be a danger to their crops. Out on the (very literal) field, being a Farmer is a dangerous position to be in due to them mostly being situated on the edges of Sanctuary. They could come under threat of unknown alien species, infection, growths, parasites, fungus, and drunken ramblers just to name a few!
Agriculture also has a very strong relationship with Resource Acquisition as it is them who receive and discover new items in order to use them towards food production. Most things found by Resource Acquisition, however, do go to Research & Development in the first instance, which is why the three departments are such strong allies. They also have a good relationship with Medical, who is often on the receiving end of botanical discoveries.
