The Kingdom of Fiormark (fee-ORE-mark)

Under the Rygan Mountains lies the kingdom of Fiormark, an old and proud dwarven nation. The Fiorans are famed for their craftmanship; weapons and armour, as well as furniture, artwork and mechinal devices. While most of the kingdom is underground, there is some agricultural and pastoral farmland in the north and east of the mountains. Consequently, while more than half of all Fiorans live under the mountains, there is a large part of the population who are farmers and shepherds, some of whom are halflings.

Government

Fiormark is a feudal kingdom, ruled by the King Under The Mountain, and divided among thanes. Each thane rules a city and has mining rights to a certain area surrounding their city, both excavated and not. The internal safety of the land is managed by the Gate Wardens, a professional militia who works for the king. The thanes provide soldiers to the king, and gather taxes on his behalf, but are otherwise fairly independent.

History

During the dawning epoch, dwarves were mining in the Rygan Mountains, and when the mine at Fiorheim became deep enough, the miners and their community moved into the mountain to be closer to the active mine. Over time the fiorans dug long underground roads to other mines, and, and thus was created the kingdom of Fiormark. This happened in tandem with their cousins in the south, the Duurians, and the two kingdoms have had a lot of cultural exchange over the years.
