Tadaka
AKA "The Banisher". Tadaka was raised by Kaito monks, his parents killed shortly after his birth in circumstances the Phoenix have never fully explained. The child was given to the monks with the insistence that this was a samurai child, and that his connection to the kami was evident to the Isawa as an infant - beyond that, Tadaka knows little of his lineage.
He took to the rituals and teachings of the temple readily; he absorbed the stories and retold them as if he were there - over time, it became clear to him that not all of his teachers were physically present. It is insufficient to say that Tadaka sees ghosts; to him the difference between the physical and supernatural one is only that others seem to believe a difference exists.
Tadaka was uniquely suited to the task of putting spirits to rest. Not just with the strength of gun and magic, but by talking to them, treating them with respect and care, and negotiating, rather than forcing, their passage away from Ningen-do. The same gifts and skills that made him welcome in every village as he travelled also set him apart. No matter how helpful he was, he was still “that weird monk that talks to the dead” - he never attached himself to a single shrine or city, but kept on the road. There were years in which he marked time by how many pairs of sandals he wore through.
There was no catalytic event that sent Tadaka to the West, it was simply the road that felt most correct. Over time, Tadaka learned to trust the whispers and the directions that they imparted, and they led him to the town of Heiwa Toshi, arriving not long before the Scorpion attack and subsequent evacuation.
He currently resides in the Shrine of the Empty Hollow, which he constructed with the handful of other monks that escaped the flames - they hold a position of tentative authority, hosting evening meals, religious services, and resolve disputes where they are able.
