GR 21: Shards of Time

The adventure was set in the southern island of Traudira, after the establishment of a Vainite colony there, by Duke Touri Southaven. It began with the conscription of the party members to civil service. Being the only people available, they were sent on a hurried mission to meet and escort the historian, Coranna Brenner, returning from Ismani lands. Finding Coranna kidnapped, the party pursued a band of exiled Uruk Cha’alites, who had actually saved her.    Returning on board the ship Violet Mist, they landed near Hollenmoor Tower, met by Mistress Teroth Eamarilth, who appeared to know them. The party soon began to realize that they were unexpectedly shifting back and forth in time. They were sent by Duke Southaven to retrieve seven forgotten “shards” from the past, after one of these glass-like globes had been given him by a mysterious messenger at night.    Heading into the swamps of the Tourine River aboard Captain Pholerus' ship Waterlight, the captain and many of the crew were transformed into lizard-men, by the same ancient ethereal curse that had created the Saurians centuries before. Undaunted, the party continued upriver. Encountering people and places from both the past and the future, they seemed to unerringly arrive at the right place and right time to recover the shards they sought. At the same time, reactions foreshadowed that at some time in the future, they were doomed to betray their Duke and country.   OUTSIDE GAME-TIME: Though the game was never finished, the party eventually recovered all seven shards. Eventually, their quest would have led them back over a thousand years to when the ancient Thrau Empire ruled the region, and enforced the slavery of the Saurian people. The events of this game were a prelude to the adventure Campaign 23, where the ‘shards’ were shown to be the lost pieces of the broken Circlet of the Keeper, lost after the fall of Aishelon in 2219 SR.   MEMORABLE MOMENTS: This campaign had what was arguably the best — and certainly the most complicated — plot-line ever. The element of time-travel (by virtue of the Great Sword Valkstar carried by Kirik Di'Arro) added a mysterious angle to the campaign. It allowed present, past, and future history to be woven together into a single storyline. Some memorable scenes of the campaign include: the challenge of the “traitorous Captain Di'arro” by Jhenovan the Younger, as well as a battle joined with Cha’alites of the past at the site of an ancient Thrau Temple. The battle was successful, despite the clever espionage cover story: “I’m just one of them average lizard-men you see around here every day…”
