Reading Challenge and Mid-Year Goals
And just as quickly as it began, my first summercamp ended. The discord channel became quieter, the writers took a break from writing, and all of a sudden we could focus on CSS again! But, an even more magical moment is just around the corner; the time of year where we celebrate each other's work. It's reading challenge time!
A Note Before We Begin
This year was my first summercamp, and I've had the most wonderful time. Some of you may remember that I pledged to write 8 articles, but somehow I finished with 32! I couldn't have managed this without the help and support of the amazing community. You guys are all amazing! Helpfully, this reading challenge allows me to showcase some of the amazing work of those community members and let them know how cool they are. So, without further ado, below you will find ten articles written this summercamp by writers, GM's and other creatives from the community.Prompt: A Hybrid Species Intentionally Bred
Wire Dancer by Mochi
Giant, scary jellyfish? Awesome!Mochi's world The Yonderverse is a constant inspiration to my worldbuilding, writing and art and this article really encompasses that. I love the way they use science and biology in their animal classifications, but it doesn't take away from the fantasy feel of the world. I love reading a species article from Mochi because I can always tell that it's something they are passionate about!
Prompt: A tumultuous region prone to natural disasters
Lesaia or Lasia by PanthersEye
I was drawn to this article because it was about volcanoes, and I also wrote about volcanoes for this prompt. I love the way that Panthers discusses the geography of the area (an area of worldbuilding that I find challenging) but also includes aspects of myth and history. This article was a great read and I encourage you to check out Agia for more great articles.Prompt: A document of spurious or controversial attribution
Tome of Magic and Spells by CoolG
Mystery and Intrigue in a new world!CoolG is a newer member of the World Anvil community, and their world of Caelumen is incredibly cool! I loved the mystery in this article and how it was combined with prose to immerse the reader in the world. A unique take on fantasy that is a lot of fun to explore.
Prompt: A sickness that caused societal upheaval
Metadimensional Extraversion Syndrome by Rin Garnett
A very clever article, and real sense of depth!Reading articles in Rin's world wow that's a lot of stars is always great! This one in particular delved into the darker corners of this universe and was very well written. It was interesting to consider how different populations of a world react to a condition that affects their society.
Prompt: A tradition that provides comfort
Beast Type Care by Jon
Love it, love it, love it!This article in Jontaro's world of Oniran is so cute and cosy, just like all of their writing, that I could read it over and over again. I found this world during the worldbuilding awards, and have followed ever since. I love the bright, colorful art and the layout of all their articles!
Prompt: A building that was meant to be temporary
Liminal Classroom by Han
This article is not Teeth??As much as Teeth? was a marvellous piece of worldbuilding, I wanted to focus on another article in Hanhula's world Istralar. Liminal Classroom is a hauntingly beautiful article (as is all Han's work) and the combination of great writing, formatting and imagery really made it shine! The concept for this is very cool, and I enjoyed how it had slightly darker undertones. A great article!
Prompt: An animal or plant that feeds on decay
Wolf Fur by Dr Emily Vair-Turnbull
This prompt was made for a fungus article, and a fungus article was delivered!Would you expect more from a world where the followers are called mushrooms? This article in Emy's world of Etrea is a great read. Although on the shorter side, the article was packed full of detail and information. It was informative, descriptive and told me a little about the people in this world. As someone who doesn't really like fungi in real life, I approached this article tentatively, but it surprised me!
Prompt: Food often eaten by travellers
Take-out by Annie Stein
Great concept and cute art!I'd like to start by saying that Nnie's world Solaris was the world that gave me the confidence to write science fantasy; It was the first non-fantasy world I experienced on World Anvil, and taught me that I didn't have to write fantasy. This article is cute and cosy, just as I expected from this world. Using food to explore culture is really clever worldbuilding, and I think alongside the art, that is what makes this article great!
Prompt: A myth or prophecy about the end of the world
The End of Days: A Shattered Land by Tyrdal
Prose and worldbuilding, the best combinationOne of the things I've most admired in Tyrdal's world Aran'sha is the way they use prose to supplement their worldbuilding. This article does so very well, and the prose helps to give an in-world perspective to the rest of the article. This works especially well as the article is about a myth.
Prompt: A naturally sheltered place
Night's Grasp by Stormbril
Even more CSS wizardry!Stormbril's world Cathedris is full to the brim with crazy styling and css, and this article is no exception. The double-sided postcard format of this article creates a really interesting aesthetic for this article. Alongside this, the article is well written and creates a sense of intrigue even within its shorter length. This article also happens to mention volcanoes, which is incredibly awesome! Altogether an amazing article all around.
Thank you so much for featuring my wire dancers! I'm honoured to be a constant source of inspiration <3
The article was really cool, and it had art! The Yonderverse is very much a world to aspire to :D
