Praetorian Guard

There are four elite legions assigned to the protection of the Capital and the Emperos. Made up of Legiones I, II, III, and IV, they are collectively known as the Praetorian Guard. Though theoretically under the command of the Emperos, they are, in practice commanded by the most senior of all military leaders in the Imperium, a figure known as the Legatus Magnus Praetorium.

History

Originally, the Praetorian Guard (originally conceived in the days of the Itaros Imperium) consisted of only a few cohorts. Following the fall of Itaros in the Rage Wars of the 4th and 5th centuries AY, the Emperos increased the Guard to four full-strength legions. In 551, the standard auxilia for Legio IV was replaced by griffon riders (hence the name of that legion).
