Estinos Imperium

In 7689 AF, Emperos Estinos IV of the Itaros Imperium adopted the struggling city of Thaku on the Mare Orientalem. He invested millions of sesterces into the economic development of the city and decreed the name to be changed to Estinople. Two years later, he declared Estinople to be the co-capital of the Imperium.   In the second year of the reign of Emperos Nonus it became clear that this bifurcated approach could not adequately address the challenges facing the Imperium, especially in the West. Nonus petitioned the Senate to appoint Herminius as Co-Emperos of the East in 7737 AF, to which the body assented. In 7764 AF, with the fall of Itaros, Emperos Quinctilianus issued the Declaration of the New Imperium, which established the Estinos Imperium, with him as sole Emperos, abandoning all claim and kinship to the (now defunct) Itaros Imperium.

Territories

The Estinos Imperium is bounded in the north by the Mare Occidentalem and Mare Orientalem. To the West, by the Karthis River, the western edge of the Jemo Forest and the Amu River. To the South, it reaches the northwestern corner of the Erimbo Ocean. The eastern border is defined by the Numuad Hills and the Ascalpo River, except for Medulinium and the region between it and the hills to the West. In all, it is an area of roughly 32.4 million square miles.

Trade & Transport

Internally, trade primarily occurs along the established highways via cart and navigable waterways via galley. More remote areas are accessed via pack animal caravans, and the legions are known to hire out contubernii (10-person tent groups of soldiers, led by a decanus) as caravan guards for very nominal fees. Cross-border trade is open, with no exit taxes imposed and only minimal (1%) tariffs in imported goods (iron and copper are exempted from even these tariffs).

Education

The urban centers of the Imperium are reasonably well educated, though the vast rural areas are less so. Overall, the literacy rate throughout the Imperium is around 35%.   Public education is non-existent and schools and universities are very rare; however, there are many tutors available to the patrician, aristocratic, and even upper middle classes.

Infrastructure

Most major urban centers are connected either by paved highways, navigable rivers, or both. Many cities feature aqueducts, and a few even have underground sewers. Public baths are common, as are communal constant-flush privies.

Worth 1/2 of an Estinonius.   Deciterce (silver coin) - Common. Worth 1/10 of an Estinonius.   Centran (copper coin) - Very common. Worth 1/100 of an Estinonius.   Sometimes, anni are used. These are not coins. Historically, an anno was one man's wages for a full year. In current practice, however, an anno is a carefully weighted bar of platinum worth 5 gold. These are rare and generally only used by the rich for large transactions. Most shops and stalls will not accept anni in payment.
