Arcwood Galley

Arcwood Galley is a fast maneuver light-weighted sailling ship used by the Maritime Kingdom. It is one of the alternated version of trireme in which the ship focused on long-ranged combats. It was developed as a decision of navy reformation to deal with the Irgia Republic during the First Channel War.

Arcwood Galley is designed for a military purpose, it is one of two type of warships that in service; The others are Galleon.

Design

Arcwood Galley is adapted from the original trireme. It shared the simillarity such as the oars as the main propulsion, but it has a longer, larger, and sturdier hull. Sometime it is lighter than the original one. It has a single deck and a smaller sterncastle but a stronger and hulls. The ramming head still existed however not significant in usage. It can be used for shallow sea and its supply can be lasted for about a few hours.

Construction

One galley can take up to 5 to 6 months to construct. The secret of the ship are that the frame is bult first rather than hull first, resulting in strong and sturdy hull. r

History

The most notable conflict involving the force of galleys were the First Channel War in 110 BVE. In the command of Queen Imogen, she wanted to change the primary tactic from close-encounter to long-range combat. Their own triremes as well as captured Irgian ships was re-engineering by the experienced shipbuilders and herself.

Propulsion

The main propulsion are the oars. A typical galley has at least 20 to 30 oarmans on each side. Unlike Trireme, which uses 3 men arranged in three rows with 1 oar per man, it uses 3 men per oar, meaning that not only reduce its complexity, it's also make less of a operative sailor, meaning more loads to carry, more men for fighting.

The additional propulsions are sails. The ship has one or two masts which has one wide sail each. The sail has been used during travelling rather than attacking. It used one-stern rudder for steering.

Weapons & Armament

Technically, ramming is still an effective tactic but not as powerful as an ordinary trireme. Instead, it used long-range weapons. Ballistae the missle weapon is installed around the front depending of their mission; besidging, attacking, or grappling. It use stone/iron balls and harpoons as a projectiles.

The secondary weapon are arrowmem, who can mass-shooting to the enemy ship from the fistance. Those arrowmen are also trained to capable of hand-to-hand combat, so if the enemy is onboarding, those arrowman can fight back.

Communication Tools & Systems

Like the Galleon, A signal flag on top of the highest mast tell the commander what fleet it belonged. The flag has symbols such as the official emblem; a white star in a circle, and a number.

Hangars & docked vessels

All ship has been in drydocks around the Gulf of Arcwood. Sometimes it is maintained inside a hanger. It took dozen of workers to pull an empty galley into a drydock, which then the shipbuilders take a responsible for maintenance.
