Maedhrune
The Maedhrune is a symbol utilized by the Cult of Maedhros for multiple purposes. The rune is most commonly found carved into wood and filled with a dark red color, from what many assume to be blood.
History
Like most of the practices within the Cult of Maedhros, the Maedhrune is steeped in mystery as to its origins and detailed purpose. The first remembered instance of the Maedhrune showing up within the Greenwood occurred in the fall of 3297, 1E. Unknown as to its purpose, the symbol was seen as a curio by the nomadic community which had discovered it to the northeast of Throk'gar Outpost. This rune, unfortunately, was followed up by an attack on the community by a group of cultists, whose use of Maedhros's name tied the symbol to the martyr. Though the cultists took out over two-thirds of the community in the attack, the survivors were able to return to Estelión, where they reported the connection between the rune and the attack.
Significance
Following the initial sighting of the Maedhrune and subsequent attack, the symbol has been primarily viewed as a warning to all who see it, suggesting that the cult is nearby and ready to act. According to testimony from captured cultists, the rune has been used in various ways. At times the meaning is simplistic, representing the Cult, or Maedhros himself. Other times, the symbol is meant to alert other cultists of their fellows' whereabouts and activities. When predicating attacks, it is meant as a summons to Maedhros in an attempt to draw him to the dead as an offering to him.
