House Hammerhelm
A price paid in blood.
House Hammerhelm, originally named Clan Hammerhelm and its seat of Fellwind are ancient. They claim descend to one of the heroic twins of Caírdunnàn; Gamling Hammerhelm. The people of House Hammerhelm are native Caírdunnàn people unlike those descended from the people of Regia.
History
Caírdunnàn strongly resisted the conquest of William the Black, where he conquered Aedeyne. Even after crowning himself king of Aedeyne, Caírdunnàn remained independent. It took King William the Black another 7 years to conquer Caírdunnàn and even then, the Lords of House Hammerhelm resisted. When at last King William himself lead the charge and broke through the walls of the city, the Lords of House Hammerhelm saw their independence threatened. Old Lord Hammerhelm, Aethelwulf, however stern and unyielding, surrendered Fellwind. Even then, the heir to Fellwind, Ecberth the Wolf took the sword to King William, severing the Kings left lower arm before being shot by a crossbowman. Reportedly, Ecberth’s last words were: “The price of Fellwind shall be paid in blood”.
After the surrender of Fellwind, Old Lord Aethelwulf was named Earl of House Hammerhelm, bannerlords to the much larger House Aethelric of Bentburgh. While their official motto remained “Fellwind howls.” the last words of Ecberth clung to his house and “A price paid in blood” is often uttered to signify Hammerhelm pride.
