The Almanac
The Broad Cloth is a piece of theatre, and a game, but it has no script.
Instead, it has an Almanac that contains the basic structure of the story/world, and the way the journey, the experience, progresses. This includes a handful of core characters, described in a very basic way.
Within this framework, characters are created by participants, and a story unfolds in many layers and along many paths, all leading to one key event: the waulking of Elizabeth Skylark's broadcloth.
Key components of the Almanac are:
- the setting of an island with a population of about 300 people, whose main industry is the traditional manufacture of a fabric called 'broadcloth'
- the core characters: Rowan Skylark, the Chief of this clan, his mother Salvia Skylark, his daughter Elizabeth, who is soon to come of age, and his wife Holly Skylark, who died in childbirth
- the traditional coming-of-age ceremony of the waulking of a bolt of broadcloth and the singing of blessings into it, and everything which goes with that tradition
- the islanders' belief that their ancestors are Fae, and everything which goes with that belief, including the Fae as characters
- the island's traditions for choosing a Chief to lead the clan
- the details of The Copenhagen Interpretation, a system of new and existing methods for access, support, and interactive storytelling
