The Order of the Undying Flames

The Order of the Undying Flames, newly established in Glosmordin by the displaced followers of the True Flame from Alcyria, represents a blend of their old faith with the reverence for Gyan, the God of Knowledge whom they sometimes still refer to as Caelym. These priests, now far from their homeland, have adapted their beliefs to their new reality, creating a unique order that honors the tenets of both the True Flame and Gyan. The Order of the Undying Flames, while rooted in the traditions of the True Flame or Flame Wardens, has evolved to honor the new gods of Glosmordin, particularly Gyan. They have retained their zeal for spreading enlightenment and leadership but have adapted their practices to fit their new reality, blending the old and new in a way that reflects their journey and their new home.

Tenets of Faith

The Flame of Knowledge: Knowledge is the eternal flame that lights the path to enlightenment. The Order believes in seeking, preserving, and spreading knowledge, much like their former role in Alcyria. However, they now emphasize wisdom’s role in guiding communities and maintaining harmony. The flames of knowledge and purity, once embodied by Palanos (Now known as Valinos), now burn in the light of Gyan. Seek wisdom with the same fervor you sought to spread the True Flame, and let this light guide you in all deeds.   Unify through Enlightenment: Just as the True Flame sought to unite communities, so too must the Order of the Undying Flames work to bring harmony and understanding to the people of Glosmordin. Share knowledge freely, and let it be the foundation of all your actions.   Purify through Truth: The purity once sought in all deeds is now found in the relentless pursuit of truth. In your words and actions, be honest, transparent, and forthright, as Gyan teaches. Let no darkness or falsehood taint the light of knowledge. The Order upholds the importance of truth above all else, reflecting both their original tenets and Gyan’s teachings. They strive to be forthright in all their dealings, seeing transparency as a form of purity.   Conquer Ignorance with Wisdom: This tenet blends their old belief in illuminating the world with Palanos’ word with their new mission to dispel ignorance with the light of knowledge. They see Gyan’s light as a continuation of the True Flame, and their duty is to spread this light across Glosmordin. Just as you once tamed the wilderness to make it habitable, now you must conquer the wilderness of ignorance. Spread the light of wisdom and knowledge to all corners of this world, building a new civilization that honors both the old and the new.   Balance Zeal with Compassion: While the True Flame burned with intense fervor, the Undying Flames must also be tempered with compassion. Use your wisdom not only to lead but also to understand and nurture those under your care. While they once focused on expanding civilization, the Order now embraces Gyan’s teachings of cosmic balance. They work to align themselves and their communities with the natural order, promoting both innovation and harmony.

Ethics

The Order of the Undying Flames seeks to:   Illuminate the World: Spread the light of knowledge to all corners of Glosmordin, ensuring that truth and wisdom guide all actions.   Preserve Balance: Work to maintain the cosmic balance that Gyan teaches, ensuring that all knowledge is used for the greater good.   Unite the Faithful: Integrate their old beliefs with the new, creating a unified order that honors both their past and their present.   Cautious Transparency: Unlike their previous openness in Alcyria, the Order has become more cautious in revealing their beliefs and practices. While they still value transparency, they are aware of the skepticism they face and choose to share their teachings more selectively, ensuring that only those truly interested and capable of understanding are given deeper insights.   Guardians of Knowledge: They see themselves as guardians of both the old and new knowledge, balancing their role as evangelists with a protective stance over the wisdom they hold. They are open to discussion and debate but are careful not to dilute their teachings.

Worship

Guidance in Marriage and Community: The priests continue to play a role in guiding the faithful in marriage, emphasizing unity, understanding, and the sharing of knowledge between partners, as well as the balance in personal and communal decisions.   Vigilance against the Darkness: As in their previous faith, the priests of the Undying Flames remain vigilant against evil forces, particularly those that spread ignorance or falsehood. However, they now also include a focus on protecting the light of knowledge from being extinguished by ignorance and preventing the spread of deceit. Though still important that they guard against dark forces like the undead, they now see ignorance and falsehood as the true enemies.    The Ritual of Eternal Flames: This also includes The Festival of the Guiding Light: Held when both moons are visible in the sky, this festival combines their old traditions with the veneration of Gyan’s celestial gifts. It is a time for sharing knowledge, reflecting on the year’s wisdom, and planning for future enlightenment. A new ritual where they light a sacred flame, symbolizing the undying pursuit of knowledge. This flame is kept burning as a reminder of their commitment to enlightenment and truth.   Ritual of the Twin Flames: A daily ceremony where priests meditate before two candles—one representing the True Flame of Valinos, the other symbolizing the light of Gyan. This ritual reinforces their dual devotion and commitment to spreading knowledge and truth.   The Candle of Insight: Each priest carries a small, ever-burning candle, symbolizing their commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and truth. This candle is both a sacred artifact and a personal reminder of their duty to illuminate the world around them.   Evolution of Evangelism: The Order still maintains a strong emphasis on evangelism, driven by their original purpose of spreading the word of Palanos (or Valinos and His servant Gyan). However, their methods have evolved:   Less Aggressive, More Reflective: They are not as aggressive in their evangelism as they were in Alcyria. Instead, they focus on spreading knowledge and wisdom in a way that aligns with Gyan’s teachings on balance and harmony. Their approach is more reflective, encouraging understanding and contemplation rather than outright conversion.   Selective Evangelism: The Order has become more selective in their evangelistic efforts, targeting those who show an openness to knowledge and wisdom, rather than preaching to all indiscriminately. They emphasize quality over quantity, seeking to cultivate deep, meaningful conversions.

Priesthood

The Order of the Undying Flames has a hierarchical priesthood structure reminiscent of their original order, but adapted to their new beliefs. The hierarchy is as follows:   High Flamekeeper: The highest-ranking priest who serves as the spiritual leader of the Order, guiding its members in their interpretation of Gyan’s teachings.   Flamewardens: Senior priests responsible for overseeing regional communities, ensuring that the tenets of the Order are upheld, and leading major rituals.   Emberkeepers: Mid-level priests who manage local congregations, perform rites, and serve as the main evangelists of the Order’s teachings.   Kindling Priests: The lowest rank, these priests are often novices or recently ordained members who are still learning the ways of the Order and assisting in rituals and community outreach.

Sects

The Order of the Undying Flames, as a newer sect of the Church of Gyan in Glosmordin, occupies an intriguing position within the religious landscape. Below are some insights into how they are perceived, their priesthood structure, and how they have evolved from their origins in Alcyria:   Perception in Glosmordin Viewed with Curiosity and Skepticism: As a newer sect, the Order of the Undying Flames is met with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Established followers of Gyan see them as an interesting but somewhat untested branch of the faith. Their adaptation of old beliefs to align with Gyan’s teachings shows resilience, but also raises questions about their authenticity and the purity of their doctrine.   Seen as Zealous but Unproven: While the Order is passionate about spreading the word of Gyan, their relatively recent arrival in Glosmordin and the remnants of their old faith lead some to view them as zealous, but not yet fully integrated into the broader religious community. They are seen as fervent, but their exact place within the larger Church of Gyan is still being determined.   Respected for Adaptability: The Order is respected for their ability to adapt and integrate into the worship of Gyan. Their acceptance of the new gods and the restructuring of their beliefs demonstrate flexibility and dedication to spiritual growth, earning them a measure of respect from more established sects.   the Order of the Undying Flames has evolved significantly from their roots in Alcyria. They have adapted their beliefs and practices to align with the worship of Gyan, becoming a respected yet cautiously observed sect within Glosmordin. Their priesthood structure, methods of evangelism, and approach to transparency have all been reshaped by their new context, blending their old fervor with the wisdom and balance taught by Gyan.
