Chapter Fourteen: Contacts and Conspiracies
General Summary
On the afternoon or April 8th, 2162, the Discontents were still figuring out their next move to secure a meeting with Hasan O'Malley, the target that Delaera had them in Chicago to neutralize--with force or without. With Wei's scientific background, he was able to concoct a scheme where the Discontents would pose as negotiators from Fuyao Beimei looking to "invent" an RFID chip that displays biometric readings in the specific glass made for space stations. Knowing that a proposal paper would be standard to give to O'Malley, Wei begins his work on a paper.
Sebastian and Raymond decide to stay in and theorize more about potential zombie defenses while James takes the time to meet up with Lily Bjorklund in Chimazon, which in Chicago is a mere train ride away. The two first catch up at a dive bar called The Silver Spoon. James mentions that he's in Chicago "for business" and he likes the area. Lily talks about how her work at Snippets has continued. The two go back to her place where she introduces them to a rock band inspired by Norwegian cattle calling. After some conversation and flirtation, the two mutually decide to take the night to the bedroom. By the morning, James was treated to an easy cereal breakfast, and went back to Cooper's Inn.
Wei finally finished the paper by 1 pm, satisfied that he had a convincing proposal to deceive O'Malley. Not having O'Malley's direct contact information, James used the alias provided by Bodi Poppiti to reach out to an old friend of O'Malley's, Conor Obada. James first reaches out using Conor's work information. The response from a different email address, quickly correct James error in reaching Obada at his job. They arranged to meet at a small cafe in over an hour. Taking separate self-driving taxis, Wei and James went into the cafe and did order some drinks as they sat and waited. Sebastian and Raymond decided to keep watch on the sidewalk, surprised the amount of people walking up and down the street in the city.
Only five minutes after entering the cafe does Conor Obada meet James and Wei. It mostly stuck to the business at hand, where Wei kept speaking in Mandarin to allow James the ability to negotiate and explain the idea of the false proposal. Conor promised to pass the information along.
As Sebastian and Raymond kept watch, Raymond actually had a note slipped to him in his pocket, with an email address for "A London Morning".
The Discontents met back at their hotel. James explained the meeting with Conor went well. Raymond mentioned the email he received. The group decided to send an encrypted message using TOR to obfuscate the source from Raymond that afternoon. Around 6 pm a response came, with some rapid response:
A London Morning: Need to know what hapening in FB. Blamed for something we didn't do.
Discontents: Who is the 1 blaming you guys?
A London Morning: Looks like Neutral Party set up up.
Discontents: Can you elaborate further?
A London Morning: Hoping you have answers to help us. Can we meet?
Spooked, Sebastian went to the back entrance of their hotel to see if they were being watched. Unfortunately, he found himself overwhelmed by the business of the unfamiliar city setting, and could focus to see any signs of being observed. After deciding to leave this potentially risky contact alone, the Discontents went to a an Asian grocery shopping center to enjoy the food court. Sebastian once again tries to see if the group is being followed, but observes nothing and goes back to enjoying the exotic aroma of the lemongrass in his food.
When the Discontents arrive back to the hotel room, Raymond receives another message asking "Do you know anything about his new friends". Attached to the message is a photo of Scoot, the underground contact that had traveled with them for some time before disappearing in Nevada. The group was a bit shaken by the revelation. Raymond responsed "Haven't seen him in 2 months. We know nothing". The mysterious contact replied "He met someone at FB during incident. The Discontents gather around to try to understand what could have happened. The theory arises that he may have let on to Fuyao Beimei the Discontents' location when they were at the Elko Commune. They decide to meet with the contact, who suggests only one or two of them meet at First Slice on Manor the next day at 11am.
Raymond and Sebastian do meet on their own, armed. After ordering a drink at the cafe, they go to the upstairs seating area nad wait, where their contact, a woman with brown hair and casual dress, sits with them. She asks if they wish to speak on the riverwalk, and all agree. While they converse, the contact reveals that she is connected with The Fighters of Greed, which the Discontents had suspected. She states that the report on the attack at Fuyao Beimei is incorrect, and the FoG have nothing to do with it. As she shares her info, Raymond informs her about the attack at Elko Commune from Fuyao Beimei. The contact asks about who Scoot may have met in Fuyao Beimei, but Raymond admits no recollection. An agreement is made to share information, with the contact stating she does have a spot open on her "web" within the organization.
Raymond and Sebastian return safely to the hotel room and share the conversation with the others. At that moment, Raymond has a vague recollection of referring someone to Scoot in order to get superglue. Soon after, the Discontents finally hear back directly from Hasan O'Malley. James tries to stay the face of the group, but Hasan rudely insists that Wei explain part of the brief given to him. Wei insists on speaking in Madarin, which Hasan insults immediately. James negotiates a time to expect to meet and go over in detail the needs of the project. No confirmed date is set as of April 11th, 2162.
