Dr. Elise Atwood's parents - Archibald and Ferris Atwood - were well-known scientists that oversaw several successful projects on Miranda that led to the development of the first mechanized chassis that were designed to aid the work of fuel platform workers. When their work was co-opted by the Sycoran Martial Council for military application, it was Dr. Ignatius Slade who stole her parents' work and designed killing machines with it.
When the Atwoods - staunch pacifists to the end - made a public outcry over the martialization of peace-time technology, the Sycoran Martial Council had them silenced for dissent. Young Elise, working at the Illium Institute of Science, was extracted by a covert team of Sycorax Free Alliance operatives and delivered the news.
