Sycoran Civil War

The Conflict

Prelude

The lead up to the Sycoran Civil War was a time plagued by fear. The social and economic elites feared the masses they presided over and the common people feared the military might of the ruling class.   In the end the tensions caused by the rigid caste system gave rise to radical activist groups who used violence to send their messages to the wider Sycoran society. Assassination and political violence became commonplace and was used as a veil for groups with less than noble intentions to get rich off of the strife.   The ruling governors' heavy-handed response to the violence only drove once loyal citizens to turn their back on the established order.   The military, initially tasked with maintaining order, became disillusioned with the government's inability to address the crisis effectively. Military leaders grew skeptical of political leadership and started asserting more influence.   As civil unrest escalated and internal divisions deepened, the central authority collapsed in on itself. Key government institutions fractured, and communication and coordination between different regions broke down. The collapse of the original government created a power vacuum, with various factions vying for control. The absence of a unified leadership allowed militaristic and authoritarian elements to seize the initiative. Recognizing the need for decisive action in the face of external threats and internal chaos, the military orchestrated a coup. This marked the emergence of the Sycoran Martial Council as a new governing body.   The collapse of the original government on Caliban was a culmination of internal weaknesses, external interference, and a failure to address the pressing issues of resource distribution and socioeconomic inequality. The power vacuum created by this collapse paved the way for the Sycoran Martial Council to establish its rule, positioning itself as a stabilizing force in the midst of the Sycoran Civil War.    The takeover by the military jaded some officers against itself and many defected to the rising People's Army. With the newfound experience of defectors like Commander Elyria Voss and Captain Lorian Steele, the People's Army was reorganized into the Sycorax Free Alliance.
