Old Currency Exchange

History

The Old Currency Exchange was a major financial institution in Cl. Arimea Vicary in Larfleur. The Currency Exchange was vital for foreign trade as it allowed the exchange of local currencies for foreign ones and vice versa. Edicts from the Senate of Larfleur made in 219 AT prevented the usage of foreign currency in the landward markets, requiring goods to be traded in officially minted Larian currency.    The concept of a currency exchange was introduced by the Corporate Dominion, whose currency exchange for the entire region of Akemar operated out of the Counting House in Cl. Arius Vicary on Insurba. The currehe ncy exchange was moved from the Counting House to the site of the current Currency Exchange building in 191 AT after the Counting House proved insufficient to cope with the expanding volumes of trade.    The Currency Exchange building was often criticised for merchants for being too far away from the docks and wharves where foreigners, who would need their currencies exchanged, arrived. In 141 PT, the Senate decreed the closure of the Currency Exchange and the construction of a new building for the Bank of Larfleur, which was previously operating out of a pub on Gete Street. When the building was finished in 147 PT, the Currency Exchange was moved into the new space.    The Old Currency Exchange kept its name and sat empty for several years. In 165 PT, the Senate established the Board of Larfleur to manage the governance of the city-proper and its headquarters were designated as the Old Currency Exchange building. By 210 PT, the Board had expanded greatly and occupied several premises around the city, but the Old Currency Exchange remained the centre of city governance.
