The Fyres
Sooty. Dirty. Miserable.
These are the words normally attributed to The Fyres, the industrial center of Ghearas. With the above ground areas dominated by great forges by the rivers and slums and factories in the areas in between, and mines and yet more homes in the dug out caverns below, a solid third of the city's population live and work in these conditions.
As if that were not enough, the guards posted within the Fyres stay along the edges to make sure that travel out of the district becomes difficult and by the factories, to retaliate against unionists, strikers, and demonstrators.
Demographics
About 95% of the District work within the industries. This includes mining, smelting, forging low quality goods, spinning textiles, weaving, making and bottling cheap spirits, processing tobacco, etc. The few people who don't work as wage labourers, because of course the factory owners and managers don't live there, run cheap bars or some sort of easy entertainment.
Government
The District Governor of the Fyres is an especially important one, since the whole industry of the city is there. As such, that District Governor has an extraordinarily large administration, especially concerning the hiring of mercs from the Guild of Swords.
Defences
It is worth noting that there are physical fortifications dividing the district in smaller chunks, patrolled by agressive guards of the Guild of Swords.
Guilds and Factions
Most of the Guilds have some sort of presence in the Fyres, either because large parts of their production chain resides there or because their business directly concerns the district (such as with the Guild of Swords). Other than the prevalence of Guilds, there are the unions. While the very first union was started around 15 After Rapture, it was quickly shut down after being deemed illegal; thus becoming the origin of the gang-like and highly illicit Union of Radical Aid.
In recent years, partially to try to stamp out the somewhat dangerous Union of Radical Aid, normal union activity has been de-criminalised, letting union movements form for every major industry. The Textile Union, the Forgers Union, the Miners Union, etc. which has resulted in far better conditions for workers than previously. With that said, the Union of Radical Aid is still alive and thriving as a criminal counterpart (especially as it helps and is helped by the other unions).
