Kênshoii (/kɛn.ʃɔːiː/)

There are many strange things in the deserts of Tel. The folklore of the hardy peoples of who live in the arid and desolate Senu and Adabi contain many fantastical tales concerning travelers who encounter reclusive and diminutive creatures that are said to physically resemble winged Alvi. In the Khemian tongue, these beings are known as the Kênshoii (translated directly as 'Life-Force of the Sands'). Those sages who collect stories of these encounters observe that the motives of Keʻnshoii are inscrutable to the mortal races; there are just as many stories of Kênshoii assisting lost travelers as there are of them misguiding through the creation of mirages. Nevertheless, as mercurial as they appear to be, there seems to be no evidence that the Kênshoii bear malice towards Humans or Kebwi. Indeed, according to the legends of the Bani Satra, the Kênshoii were born from the sand of the Senu Desert itself in order to protect it from the depredations of hostile beings like the Cynocephali or Beastmen.

Another commonality in tales of the Kênshoii is their innate ability to manipulate the strands of the Ar to produce powerful magic. Kênshoii seem to possess the gift of becoming invisible at will, and it is said that groups of five Kênshoii or more are particularly dangerous, as they can pool their mystical energies together to either bestow or remove curses. That they typically use this powerful ability to play mischievous yet harmless pranks on hapless travelers is evidence of the bizarre and utterly alien mindset of the fey Kênshoii.
