Dovin

Dovin are born with any elemental attunement.
The newest people to join the Skies, the Dovin are a society of Sapie and Kissed native to their mountainous home island of Dovin Prime. Fair of skin, and dark of hair, they bare no relation to the other Sapie of the Greenborn, raising serious questions about their development. According to the Dovin themselves, they claim not to be descended from the Precursor Race, but rather, to be the direct creations of The Four Titans themselves.   The Dovin developed in a unique environment, as their native island of Dovin Prime is the only known island with four differently attuned Source Crystals in the skies. It is a large island, home to two small salt water bodies, fertile plains, and bisected by a massive mountain range. Several small satellite islands drift around the island, forming a slight Jagged Belt through which only experienced sailors can maneuver regularly. The largest mountain on the island, Mount Truvelus, is volcanic thanks to the presence of a fire attuned crystal sitting at it's heart, giving the island a small amount of mineral wealth.   The presence of all four elemental Sources also impacted the Dovin spiritually, as they are a pious people who worship all four Titans as gods which they believe guide their fortunes on a daily basis. Dovin culture is extremely shrine centric, as they believe in physically marking holy spaces for the sake of posterity. Dovin dot their communities with temples, monoliths, statues, and all manner of stele to denote both people of cultural importance and the sites of holy miracles. The most elaborate construction, however, are reserved for monuments to the gods. Dovins also participate in a great number of mandatory religious celebrations every year, which function both as times of relaxation and events which help strengthen the cohesion of the community.   Culturally, the Dovin are divided across a series of strict class systems which color how the society interacts with others. The The Kingdom of Dovin is arranged as a constitutional monarchy, governed by both their king and a senate composed of the ruling Rema class. In the first century, the Dovin were split in a war between the two cities of Korvrema and Mineos. The Korvrema won the war, establishing itself as the ruling community of Dovin Prime. Previously, all Dovin were considered more or less equal, save for the divinely appointed king, but after the war, only citizens of Korvrema were allowed to be appointed to senate and vote on legislation, while the people of Mineos had no legal standing and were not considered citizens. Over time, as populations moved around the island and such distinctions could no longer be made by where people lived, Rema (from Korema) and Eos (from Mineos) became distinct classes across the entire island. Both the Rema and Eos are considered above the slaves which are brought onto the island from the colonies.   Rema are allowed to own land, vote on legislation, be appointed to the senate, own slaves, and potentially marry into the royal family. Eros, on the other hand, cannot own land, cannot be married without the express permission of a cleric, and cannot vote, but can own private property and become merchants. Both classes can join the The Scarlet Shield, the military of the The Kingdom of Dovin, but Eros are specifically barred from promotion after a certain point. The only facet of Dovin culture some level of equality is in the various religious orders which govern the spiritual health of the people, as both classes can become priests with no restrictions.   The majority of Dovin are Sapie, but a few are born as Kissed. In Dovin society, being Kissed is considered to show ones divine heritage, suggesting that they are descended from one of The Four Pantheans . In modern times, Kissed are often donated to one of the temples which match their attunement so that they may be raised as priests of their ancestor-god.   The Dovin first made their debut by conquering both the islands of Dovin, Minor in and New Stone, establishing colonies on both islands.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Dovin speak primarily Auran, as it was believed to be the language given to the Dovin by the sky god Yevarios, the king of the gods. Merchants learn Primordial so that they can communicate with traders, and those who are tasked with the directing of large groups of slaves learn both Ignan and Terran so that they can more easily communicate with them.

Common Dress code

Dovin wear skirts, togas, and dresses exclusively. They favor monochromatic fashion, generally meant to signal what an individual's attunement is and by extension, which god has claimed them. Pants are considered barbaric, a bizarre garment of the uncivilized and unclean.

Art & Architecture

Dovin architecture is mainly comprised of stone. Buildings are supported with great intricately carved pillars, taking advantage of archways and domes to support the construction of incredibly large buildings that stand as engineering marvels of stonework. Portions of stone are carved with scenes depicting mythological features, or otherwise statues are often worked into the design. Originally many of the buildings were built out of volcanic rock and limestone, the later having risen in abundance with the island. In more modern times, the colony of Dovin, Minor has given Dovin stone-cutters access to an abundance of marble, which now comprises a majority of their building materials. At some point, concrete was discovered, giving new purpose to Dovin Prime's large limestone deposits, further facilitating the construction of even larger buildings.

Coming of Age Rites

Coming of are rites are different for men and women Dovin. Young engage in a practice called Elucidation where they engage in homosexual sex with another young man, generally older by only a year or so, as a form of initiation. Women, however, are only considered mature once they have been married and bore their first child.

Common Myths and Legends

Dovins believe themselves to be the direct creations of The Four Titans following the Fracturing. To Dovins call the Titans the The Four Pantheans , and imagine them as far more humanoid in both appearance and temperament.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The Dovin culture is strictly divided across gender roles. Men are the only gender allowed to own property, land, or vote. Women's movement is strictly policed, particularly for the women of the Rema class who are not allowed out of the home without a male escort. Misogyny runs rampant through this society, and wives are often treated as little more than property by their husbands. Mythically speaking, men are considered to be the "default" form of being, with woman being believed to be a deviation originally created for the purpose of reproduction.

Relationship Ideals

Dovin men are expected to have several male lovers over the course of their life. Male and female relationships are generally supposed to be limited to reproduction and the binding of familial contracts. Wives are expected to be faithful to their husbands and bare their children, while men are expected to provide for their families and have no such expectations of monogamy.
"Yes, your forests are mighty. Yes, your ocean-islands are vast. Yes, your iron cities are impressive in the way they cut the clouds, and yes, your inventions are powerful. But nothing, nothing in your skies compares to the city I call home. To the men I call my brothers in arms. To the system we have built. And one day, you will see that. And on that day, you will beg us to rule you." -Golos, General of The Scarlet Shield.
