Sapie
The Sapie are not the most physically impressive race in the Fractured Skies. Compared to the other sentient races, they aren't particularly strong, lack the ability to fly or communicate with animals, have no natural magical abilities outside of their Birthmark, and cannot generally survive under water for extended periods of time. Despite this, Sapie have proven to be some of the most adaptable and creative people in the Sky. They seem to have a great amount of plasticity in cognition and the gaining of new skills, perhaps even more so than the other races. With enough time and experience, almost any Sapie can learn any profession, gain any skill, or survive in almost any environment.
Sapie are said to be the race that most closely resembles the Precursor Race, those who called the The Deadlands home before the end of their world and the begging of the Fractured Age. For some Sapie, this is a source of shame, as most believe the Precursors to be some how responsible for the state of the world today. Other Sapie see this as a source of pride, believing themselves to be more closely connected to a technologically superior society that once ruled the entirety of the lands below.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Sapie have a standard humanoid build, two arms, two legs. They are perhaps the most physically varied race, as among their number are all manner of body shapes, unique facial characteristics, and a wide variety of hair and skin colours. Rarely do two Sapie look alike, and this seems to be a natural feature of the species.
Biological Traits
Sapie are unique in their ability to be born with any elemental attunement. While most Sapie are earth attuned, as the earth energy seems to have played a large part in their development, any Sapie born to a parent with a different elemental attunement, or even within a proximity to a strong enough source of elemental energy, can emerge with any attunement.
Genetics and Reproduction
Sapie give birth to live young, with a gestation period of around 8 to 9 months. Occasionally, Sapie are born in pairs, but this is extremely uncommon, and mostly limited to a few bloodlines.
Growth Rate & Stages
Sapie reach physical maturity around their 17th year, but emotional maturity can take decades beyond that. Sapie grow relatively slowly in comparison to most of the other races, but are more able to learn and acquire a wide variety of skills during this period of extended development.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Sapie social structure is incredibly flexible, often absorbing parts of other cultures that they interact with or are subsumed by. Sapie often sometime "borrow" words from the other major languages of the Skies, using them to capture ideas not generally captured within their own dialect.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Sapie lack the ability to see in the dark, so many of their settlements and homes require artificial light sources after nightfall. Their hearing is acute when young, but slowly begins to deteriorate with age.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Sapie have the unique ability to reproduce with any other sentient race among the Fractured Skies. While mechanically, some are far more difficult than others, Sapie can both impregnate and be impregnated by just about any descendant of the Precursor Race. The children of these unions are generally one race or the other, but show characteristics of both in small or large degree.
For example, the child of a Sapie and a Bovid may have a squarer face, a small tail, or even horns. Likewise the child of a Sapie and Shobu may have larger eyes, a split jaw, or portions of their body may be covered in crustacean-like plate.
Lifespan
80 Years
Average Height
Sapie on average range between 1.6 to 2.0 meters tall, however individual members of the spices can be much taller or shorter than the average. Some Sapie even stand at about the stature of the Doro, but are no less Sapie than those who stand more around the average.
