Northern Glaive

A northern glaive is a variety of glaive primarily used in Ustraria and Kiva for mounted combat; it is commonly referred to as simply a glaive. It is the primary weapon of the Qalir and Razakir divisions of the Ustrarian Itoqir.

DESIGN

Shaft: traditionally ironwood or metal, with those for military purposes being brightlescia in modern times. If a decoration is not attached to the eye of the blade it may be secured to the collar.   Butt: may be present or absent regardless of shaft material; if present, may be metal or wood. Some varients with metal butts may augment it into a short spike, a mace head, or a sharpened hook.   Blade: Mildly-curved, assymetric, thick blade with single complete sharp edge, with the straight edge having a 1-5" bite; halfway up the straight edge may be a sharpened spur, hook, or notch for catching an opponent's weapon; near to this spur/notch/hook (in the broad part of the blade) may be an eye.   Itoqir-issued glaives adhere to typical overall dimensions, with brightlescia shafts and blunt, rounded butts. Their blades do not have an eye but their bites are three knuckles deep, and the blade backs have a two-knuckle spur. For ceremonies they will attach a small sienna sash to the collar.

History

It is not known which came first, the northern glaive or the bull glaive, and both weapons appear to have evolved simultaneously. It finds best use in more open environments.

Significance

The northern glaive, like its shorter sibling the bull glaive (or southern glaive), features prominently in the Book of the Spear.
