Cenn

Cenn is the one Shade-infected dragon permitted to exist in The Hollow, kept in quarantine by Frip so that she and the Architects' Guild can experiment with ways to stop the spread of Shade corruption and perhaps even save the souls it affects.   Typically, Cenn's inner experience of his quarantine is one of sensory deprivation, Shade-induced pain, and madness -- whether the latter is a result of the Shade tainting his soul or his experiences is anyone's guess. Occasionally, a researcher may forge the proper links to actually communicate with Cenn, or even allow him to manifest in a Hollow environment.

Personal history

As a gifted young scholar Outside, Cenn encountered The Shade by pure accident, and then his life took an abrupt left turn. He ended up in the clutches of a pair who collected Shade-touched "curiosities," and when they withered and disappeared, he died of thirst and neglect in his cell.   (The above inspired by lore written by Paresseux.)   But even death didn't free Cenn from his corruption. He'd connected to The Hollow to attend classes at Lukra University, and so the Hollow caught his soul, giving him a second chance at life ... at least, it would have been a second chance, had his Shade corruption not followed him to the Hollow.

Mental Trauma

Cenn's experiences both in life and in quarantine within the Hollow have left him extremely unstable. His default state is great psychological distress, and on the rare occasions when he is allowed to manifest an avatar, researchers usually find it necessary to restrain him. Above all he fears isolation, imprisonment, being forgotten -- which makes his quarantine a not-so-living hell.

Relationship Reasoning

Though Cenn often thinks of himself as forgotten, left to rot in his own Shade, Frip actually thinks about him quite a bit. His existence allows her to put a name and a face to the problem of Shade-touched souls. Over time, she has come to care about him, though he knows her as no more than one of his jailers, and she looks forward to someday curing him, when she believes that his gratitude will lead him to reciprocate her warm, decidedly platonic feelings.
