The Hollow
The Hollow started out as a magitech project, a virtual reality network in which dragons and beast-folk could come together and work or play in tandem, without worrying about little things like territorial wars and size differences.
Then it became something else. The first anyone knew of this transformation was when a prominent member of the Hollow's community, Aridatha, died in the world outside. Her friends and clan mourned her -- only for Lioska to enter the Hollow the next day and discover Aridatha still there, quite surprised to hear of her own demise.
See, you can't just leave the Hollow. Once you've connected once, the Hollow forms a link with your soul -- no matter how much later you die, you'll end up in the Hollow afterwards. Forever.
Some users see the Hollow as a miracle, as the immortality they'd always dreamed of. Others see it as an inescapable nightmare.
Users continue to connect to the Hollow from Outside, most of them fully aware of the afterlife-long consequences of their decision. As a result, users of the Hollow are divided into two categories: the living, who can still disconnect and engage with the real world, and the dead, who have no physical bodies to return to. There's no obvious way to tell who's who, except that the living, often known as Wires (from "live wire" or Hollowire), disappear from the Hollow for various lengths of time to tend to their real lives, while the dead -- the Echoes -- never leave.
